 European spruce ranges
Because of the thorough exploitation and devastation of the forests through the end of the 18th century and the enormous timber demand in early industrial times, the natural forests, which had already regrown after the retreat of the glaciers, were eliminated and eventually reborn as artificial forests.
Today Picea abies comprises 35% of the tree cover in Germany, and most of that is in managed forests.
Picea abies from Jugoslavia is usually identical in appearance to Picea rubens from the Adirondacks and Picea engelmannii from northern Idaho.

While noble and Fraser fir, are highly susceptible to Phytophthora root rot, there is considerable variation in the susceptibility Abies spp.
One potential option to minimize the impact of this disease in sites that are conducive to its development is to plant a species like Nordmann, Turkish or Momi fir that are less susceptible than noble or Fraser fir.
In Denmark, the condition is also referred to as "røde nåle på nobilis" (red needles on noble fir).

Christmas Tree: Traditions, Production, and Diseases
Applications of selective fungicides have not generally been effective in controlling this disease on noble or Fraser fir in plantations in the PNW or North Carolina because of the difficulty in providing the volume of water needed to effectively drench the root zone of large trees and the need to make repeated applications.
There is increasing evidence from the PNW and Denmark that the development of CSNN is under strong genetic control (Fig.
In Denmark, Christmas tree geneticist U. Nielsen has found that noble fir provenances from Oregon and Washington were much more prone to CSNN than highly selected Danish provenances (personal communication).

Picea chihuahuana & Abies numidica too late? - Conifers Forum - GardenWeb
What I think Bboy is referring to is that their inherent genetic ability to tolerate frost won't change, and of course he's right about that: if they won't survive -15°C this winter, they wouldn't in subsequent winters either.
At an arboretum in zone 7 Denmark, Picea chihuahuana was very badly cut back (but not killed) by an abnormally severe winter when it went down to -27°, while Abies numidica was undamaged.
I did order an Abies Cilicia, Abies Marocana, and a Picea Wilsonii from Stanley and Sons which will be shipped Monday.

 Forests : 1. What is a forest?
The forest canopy is so dense that little light reaches the forest floor, thus the vegetation on the forest floor is thin.
The forests consist mostly of evergreen conifers with needle-like leaves, such as pine (Pinus), fir (Abies), and spruce (Picea).
The official definition of natural forest used in Denmark provides a good, broad explanation of the term.

Most yield tables include estimates of natural plus mortality rates (for example, mortality is estimated to be 0.4 percent of living trees per year in Norway).
Thorsen and Helles (1998) estimate the probability of total damage caused by strong winds for a Picea abies stand in Denmark to be about 1.5-3.0 percent per year if the stand were thinned no more than a year previously (the probability declines strongly with time after thinning).
Climate changes may increase the risks of tree loss-for example, by more frequent winds or increased insect attacks.

Many of these "new" firs have high ornamental value and will find their way into those types of plantings rather than as cut Christmas trees.
Most abies (true firs) have beautiful foliage and some will be raised for floral use - selected cuttings for use in the making of weaths, flower arrangements, center pieces, etc.
Denmark, for example, ships millions of pounds of bough material (Nordmann and Noble) into the European floral market.
