Abijam reigned - So his reign began with Jeroboam's eighteenth year, continued his whole nineteenth year, and ended within his twentieth year, in which also Asa's reign began.
And his grand-mother's name may be here mentioned, rather than his mother's, because his mother was either an obscure person, or was dead, or unwilling to take care of the education of her son, and so he was educated by the grand-mother, who, though she poisoned his father Abijam with her idolatrous principles, ver.

The very name Abijam means “my father is Jehovah.”  That is interesting because the Bible does not stress to us that his father was Jehovah; the Bible stresses for us that his mother was Maachah.

Who was the mother of Abijam (Abijah)? - BibelCenter [apparent] contradictions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Abijam's (Abijah's) mother is once called the "daughter of Abishalom" and once the "daughter of Uriel of Gibeah".
Maacha was therefore not literally the real "mother" of Abijam, but rather the word "mother" is used by means of the figure of speech Synecdoche (of species) for a female ancestor.
She was in reality the grandmother of Abijam, but she is mentioned here in the record about the beginning of Abijam's reign because of her position and her influence at the royal court.

Yet Abijam (called Abijah in 2Chronicles 13, and Abia in 1Chronicles 3) is said to have reigned three years.
While most of Abijam's story is recorded in Chronicles instead of Kings, the reference in 1Kings 15:7 to the "book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah" is apparently to some other book, as our book of Chronicles appears to have been written long after the books of Kings.
Abijam was not given a high rating in 1Kings 15:3, yet Chronicles records an appeal to Jeroboam that illustrates how the proper temple worship (compare Ezekiel 44:15; 48:11) continued under most of the Jewish kings—often with the king's approval—even when the king saw no personal need to steer himself or the nation clear of idolatry.
