Only Jerome notes this to be a Jewish village and probably it is es semu’a where remains of a synagogue have been found.
Possibly following the Tabula Peutinger which has it 18 miles from Damascus (K. 76:4) it is possibly located at suk wadi barada on the way to Paneas (K. In Eusebius’ day Phoenicia was a distinct ‘Roman province not to be confused with Palestine or Syria.
It has been suggested that nearby Kh es safsafeh is the place and it does have evidence of lengthy occupation.

This bitter sigh, appropriate to their tragic situation, is what remained in the memory of R. Shmuel bar Nahman from his childhood as he balanced on his grandfather's shoulders while fle eing the persectuions.
In other words, the way for us to most effectively and accurately understand the impact of the Torah's m e ssage is to try to "hear" it as did the first audience to whom any particular passage was addressed.
Therefore, it is not implausib l e to maintain that as the events transpired and the prophecies given, they were committed to writing.

 PREFACE
It passes the site of Abila and the Assyrian ruin Tell es Salahiyeh, and empties itself in the marsh Bahret el Kibliyeh or Bahr el Merj, “lake of the meadow.” Porter calculates that 14 villages and 150,000 souls depend on it for their water supply.
Probably Abel lay in the Ard el Huleh, the marshy land which the sea of Merom drains; perhaps at Abil (Robinson, 3:372), a village on the top of a little conical hill (Porter, Giant Cities of Bashan).
Abila stood in the Suk (meaning a market) wady Barada, a gorge where the river breaks down through the mountain Antilebanon toward the plain, with a semicircular background of cliffs three or four hundred feet high, between Heliopolis (Baalbec), 32 miles off; and Damascus,18.

Nu 3:4 26:61 1Ch 24:2 It is probable that when they committed this offence they were intoxicated, for immediately after is given the law prohibiting the use of wine or strong drink to the priests.

The prevailing identification of Abel-beth-maacah is with Abil, a few miles West of Dan, on a height overlooking the Jordan near its sources.
If we treat the record of the times of Abiathar as fairness demands that a record be treated in a court of justice, or a scientific investigation, or a business proposition, or a medical case, we will accept the facts substantially as they are found in Samuel and Kings and Chronicles and Mk.
Abib is not properly a name of a month, but part of a descriptive phrase, "the month of young ears of grain." This may indicate the Israelite way of determining the new year (Ex 12:2), the year beginning with the new moon nearest or next preceding this stage of the growth of the barley.

The site is indicated by ruins of a temple, aqueducts, &c., and inscriptions on the banks of the river Barada at Suk Wadi Barada, a village called by early Arab geographers Abil-es-Suk, between Baalbek and Damascus.
Though the names Abel and Abila differ in derivation and in meaning, their similarity has given rise to the tradition that this was the place of Abel's burial.
