Ability score - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ability scores are usually determined during character creation and expanded with experience points gained later in the game.
An ability score is any attribute possessed by a fictional character (such as a player character) in a role-playing game, which serves to define the character’s basic traits.
Ability scores are the values from which other characteristics are derived.

Neverwinter Nights Stratics - Ability Scores
The point cost for each ability score, up to a score of 18, is detailed in Table 1.
Now that we have worked through the ability scores for our two young characters, you should hopefully be able to make up many more characters that fit whatever concepts you have about your own new characters.
Ability scores give modifiers to various game mechanics.

If the ability is greater than or equal to 10, the player must roll greater than or equal to the current ability.
There is a penalty of 1 if the ability is mental and the class’s prime requisite is physical, or if the ability is physical and the class’s prime requisite is mental.
If the ability is less than 10, the player must roll less than or equal to the current ability.

 Ability Scores for Characters
The player may then select a set of 6 ability scores by reading in a straight line anywhere on that matrix, whether that be reading a row forwards or backwards, reading a column up or down, or one of the two diagonals backwards or forwards.
Also, a characters lowest score could still be Dexterity, and if the player had wanted to play a thief (or the party desperately needed a thief) the ability score generation method is getting in the way.
Twelve such ability score sets are generated and the player chooses the one he likes best.

NOVELL: Novell Testing Information - Testing Format
The test concludes when a) your ability is estimated with sufficient accuracy, b) the program is at least 95 percent confident that your ability score lies somewhere above the passing score, or c) the maximum number of questions is given.
Adaptive test scores are based on the difficulty of the questions you answer correctly and incorrectly not on the number of questions answered correctly.
In other words, the score is based on the difficulty levels of the questions you can answer correctly, rather than simply on the number of questions you answered correctly.

 The Basics :: d20srd.org
In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level.
This ability is the most important one for rogues, but it’s also high on the list for characters who typically wear light or medium armor (rangers and barbarians) or no armor at all (monks, wizards, and sorcerers), and for anyone who wants to be a skilled archer.
The ability that governs bonus spells depends on what type of spellcaster your character is: Intelligence for wizards; Wisdom for clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers; or Charisma for sorcerers and bards.

Characters are extremely average with very few extreme ability scores, 55% of all characters made this way will not have a single score of 3, 4, 5, 6 and the same percentage wont have a 15, 16, 17 or 18.
This page simply analyzes each method showing what the average score will be using that method and shows the chance of getting the highest and lowest score for that particular ability score.
An example may be 4 scores of 10 and two of 18 compared with all six scores of 13.

 Severe Discrepancy Determination by Formula
Kate obtains an IQ score of 90 and an achievement score of 74.
Because most tests do not report scores in terms of Z, we can use a formula to calculated Z: The simplest way to regress a particular score (either IQ or achievement) is to multiply the correlation between the two measures by the Z score you wish to regress.
When Kate obtained an IQ score of 90 and an achievement score of 74 her 16-point difference was considered non-significant.

Players now can modify their ability scores by subtracting points from one ability and adding them to the other ability in that pair.

 Super IQ Exam
Verbal ability means having an expansive range of vocabulary, being able to use it, and feeling a desire to add to it.
By analyzing your individual scores on those 8 scales, we are able to look beyond the raw IQ score into how you process information, and which intellectual strengths you're best at.
In every-day life, abstract reasoning ability is used to understand complex, multi-layered situations, sometimes involving the associations and relationships between two seemingly different sets of information.

 Differential Ability Scales
In cases where this is not possible, examiners can convert the 0 raw scores to ability and then T scores and interpret the results with extreme caution.
One exception to the use of the 0 raw score is when the examiner believes that the child's performance does not accurately reflect the child's ability.
In a case where a child refuses to do a task or to answer questions, the raw score would reflect the child's unwillingness to participate in the testing of that ability and not reflect the child's inability to do the task.

Classless Skills & Powers: Ability Score Generation
Optionally, you can provide for character ability growth if using methods V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, or X. You have the player hold back some ability score points that are then applied as the character goes up in level later in play.
Roll up ability scores as usual using any of the methods in the Skills and Powers handbook (pp.12-21).
Each time the character levels, the DM allows the player to have one "growth point" to add to any of the character’s ability scores that is below its maximum.

That means to increase Herbalism up to your ability score, you must spend 2 points per point of proficiency, then 4 points per point beyond your ability up to 18, then 10 points per point to increase your proficiency beyond your racial maximum.
Also, optionally, the DM may not allow you to increase your proficiency beyond the related ability score + 5, with the reason that if you don't have the dexterity to be a master tumbler, all the practice in the world won't help.
The third stage is to increase your proficiency beyond the racial maximum of the associated ability score.

EN World - Morrus' D&D / d20 News & Reviews Site - Alternate Ability Score Generation by Rolling
The greater the randomness and inequity of initial ability scores among PC's the more the DM needs to be willing to step in and allow re-rolls of low characters even if they DO meet pre-determined "minimums" and/or even require re-rolls of inappropriately high-stat characters.
With the distribution of the rolls, inability to assign the rolls to a particular ability, and other racial modifiers you may end up in a rare instance with a half-orc with 22 strength but other abilities like intelligence (-2) and charisma (-2) with very low single digit scores.
Scores are (usually) limited to 18, but all racial adjustments occur after everything's over.

For the (N = 42) sample of Junior High School students the Spatial Ability score mean was 10.07; the Sequential Ability score mean was 7.55; and the Verbal Conceptual Ability score mean was 6.75.
The pattern that may be indicative of an Indian cognitive style demonstrates Spatial Ability scores significantly higher than Sequential Ability scores, and Sequential Ability scores significantly higher than either Verbal Conceptual Ability or Acquired Knowledge Ability scores.
Realizing that spatial ability appears to be a relative strength for these students, it would seem warranted to search for curricular materials that use a spatial, visually presented format to teach language conceptualization and basic world knowledge/information.

 FAQs
A: As the book says, choose all Abilities, then find the final Base Rating scores for each, and thereafter figure out which of the Abilities will have what percentile score attached to it, and only then calculate the Ability scores.
Only after all Abilities are selected should they be put into an order of 1st through whatever, and the scores for each found as per the rules—with a human race Avatar that will be 100%, 80%, 60%, and 40%.
Anyway, at the default score of 10, there is a fair base of capacity there, but the Avatar seems to have spent the majority of his time concentrating on other fields, shall we say.

The real problem with using ability damage this way is that it leaves the insanity portion completely up to whoever is playing the character.
