  ABISHAG (Jewish Encyclopedia) - BibleWiki
Solomon, interpreting this request for the wife of the late king as evidence of a plot on the part of Adonijah to strengthen his claim to the throne (since according to archaic law, a man's concubines became the inheritance of his heir), put his rival to death (I Kings, ii.
Abishag, the Shunammite, though only half as beautiful as Sarah, merited the rank of queen on account of her beauty (Sanh.
Although Abishag never became David's wife, yet, since by virtue of her personal service she belonged to the royal household, it was treasonable on the part of Adonijah to petition Solomon to grant him the Shunammite as his wife.

 Abishag
When reading this passage I had often wondered why it was necessary to bring in Abishag to fulfill the role that she was asked to fulfill.
She had to be pure and undefiled and, as a virgin, Abishag was.
I believe Abishag is a type of the Church mentioned in Ephesians 5:27, "That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." This is why she had to be a virgin.

Sun and Shield: Abishag: Beauty contestant and bedwarmer
The Bible doesn't say so, but it is possible that Abishag was required to remove some or all of her clothing, so as to be a more effective bedwarmer.
Whereas Abishag got promoted to the palace, He was temporarily demoted from creator and sustainer of the universe (Colossians 1:16-17) to a servant's role (Philippians 2:6-11).
So Abishag, a servant girl, was a witness to palace politics, and even part of palace politics, while she was just doing her job.

The Song of Songs Revealed -- Chapter 6
His implied right to Abishag the Shulamite (technically his father's concubine), his political marriage to Pharaoh's daughter, his reception of the Queen of Sheba, and his royal harem (according to one source, the third largest in recorded history) are all mentioned -- but never his attachment in true Love to any of these women.
Abishag, chosen out of all Israel for her youthful beauty, was the "Miss Israel" of her day.
Were Abishag the same as Shulamith, she would surely have been at least as important a personage as Pharaoh's daughter or the Queen of Sheba (and loved far more than either).

King David, Abishag and the 18th Dynasty
Abishag, hailing as she did from Shunem, may well have been the daughter of David's wife (taken from king Saul) 'Ahinoam the Jezreelite' (Shunem and Jezreel face each other in northern Israel), the daughter of pharaoh Ahmose.
The youthful Abishag therefore looms as a very powerful and important figure by now in the palace of Jerusalem; having been intimately connected with the great king David, she was close to his son/successor, Solomon, and the powerful queen, Bathsheba.
Perhaps the reason why Solomon did not take Abishag for his own was that David may have already selected her to be the wife of an older son of Bathsheba's, who would become pharaoh Thutmose II of Egypt.
