Abitur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abitur (from Latin abire = go away, go off) is the word commonly used in Germany for the final exams young adults (aged 18, 19 or 20) take at the end of their secondary education, usually after 12 or 13 years of schooling.
Even though the Abitur is often and incorrectly compared to a High school diploma in the United States, it is academically closer to the associate degree of a US college, as it usually requires specialisation in four to five subject areas.
In the German language the European Baccalaureate is called europäisches Abitur, and the International Baccalaureate is called internationales Abitur, both not to be confused with the German Abitur.

Where central entry restrictions apply since the winter semester 2002, 51% of the available places are commonly filled on the basis of Abitur grades and 25% on the basis of the waiting period since the admissions qualification was acquired.
The remaining 24% of applicants for restricted courses are chosen by the universities themselves eg based on Abitur grades or interviews or professional experiences.

In spite of regional differences and ongoing debates about the value of the Abitur from one Land to the next, the Abitur examinations are based on a set of national guidelines that reflect a broad-based and rigorous curriculum and the highest standards of educational excellence (Ashwill 1991).
The Abitur certificate is awarded on the basis of a combination of the student's grades over the final 2 years of coursework and scores on the examinations.

Archived: The Educational System in Germany: Case Study Findings; Chapter 2 - The Gymnasium
Although obtaining the Abitur with the best grades possible is the ultimate goal for most Gymnasium students, those who graduate from a highly regarded Gymnasium have an advantage in obtaining vocational training, entrance to a university, and a job.
Rather, the Abitur is made by each school, so naturally the schools can adapt their questions to the ability of the students in the schools.
Since it is assumed that the Abitur should be a test of what the students have learned in class, a completion exam also assumes a certain amount of articulation and cooperation between teachers of the same subject in different grades.

The Abitur is the certification that a student has successfully completed the German college-preparatory educational program and has scored passing grades on the Abitur examinations administered during the final year of secondary school.

Admission to the Abitur program is granted if the student has been enrolled in the pre-Abitur courses conducted in grade 10 and if the student receives passing grades on the Vergleichsarbeiten, Berlin's centralized examinations determining successful completion of German intermediate school (grades 7 through 10).
