Topic: Abomasum

  G7701 Displaced Abomasum, MU Extension
The abomasum is the fourth, or "true," stomach in the cow.
Adjacent to the abomasum, on the left side of the abdomen, is the large first stomach, or rumen (Figure 2).
The abomasum occasionally may be displaced to the left of the rumen and upwards when its muscular wall loses tone and the stomach becomes filled with gas.

Metabolic Diseases of Dairy Cattle - Displaced Abomasum
Displaced abomasum (DA) is a repositioning of the abomasum (the fourth or true stomach) from its normal position on the right ventral abdominal wall.
The abomasum becomes dilated with fluid and/or gas with subsequent migration to an abnormal position on the right or left side.
Distention of the abomasum is caused primarily by gas and may be accompanied by an accumulation of fluid within the organ.

ABOMASUM (caillette), the fourth or rennet stomach of Ruminantia.
From the omasum the food is finally deposited in the abomasum, a cavity considerably larger than either the second or third stomach, although less than the first.
The base of the abomasum is turned to the omasum.

The Incredibly Complicated Cow - Dandy Designs - Does God Exist? - JanFeb04
At birth, there is a structure (called an esophageal groove) in the reticulum of the calf which conveys milk directly to the omasum and abomasum, bypassing the rumen and reticulum.
In this way, the calf can swallow milk that goes to the abomasum where it is digested by enzymes secreted by the calf, then a moment later swallow a bite of hay that goes to the rumen.
For example, antibodies (proteins which are in colostrum, the first mammary secretion produced by the cow after the calf is born) can pass through the abomasum intact and be absorbed in the small intestine to provide immunity to the newborn calf.

The genera Ostertagia and Teladorsagia consist of nematodes that parasitize the abomasum of a variety of ruminants.
The worms cause profound pathologic changes in the mucosa of the abomasum which interferes with secretion of hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen, the precursor of pepsin, an important enzyme in the digestive process.

An increase of the capacity of all the stomachs compartments was verified with the progress of the age of the calves, but with growth rates differentiated among the compartments.
The increase of the reticulo-rumen growth and the decrease of the abomasum growth with increase of age were observed.
Up to 50 days of age the proportion of the reticulo-rumen and abomasum stomach compartments was changed, but the omasum maintained a constant rhythm of development.

 Displaced Abomasum in the Goat
During that process, the abomasum may slip to the left and become pinned under the weight of the rumen.
This causes the opening of the abomasum, the pylorus, to be pinched off, and the doe begins experiencing metabolic problems.
Displaced abomasum is more common in does that have carried three or more fetuses, because there is more opportunity for shifting organs once the uterus is empty.

They are named the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.
The rumen is the largest compartment and is like a fermentation tank, providing the anaerobic environment, constant temperature and pH, and constant mixing that allows microbes to break down the cellulolse.
The reticulum, known as the "Honeycomb", is is the smallest compartment.

Altering the Faty Acid Composition of Milk Fat by Diet (Illini DairyNet)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The objective of this experiment was to determine the potential to increase the content of monounsaturated fatty acids in milk fat by infusing different amounts of two fatty acid mixtures rich in the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid (derived from high-oleic sunflower or canola).
The fatty acid mixtures were infused for 3 days at each of four amounts in a sequence of 0,.3,.6,.9,.6,.3, and O pounds/day (a total of 21 days for each fatty acid mixture); cows then were changed to the opposite fatty acid mixture, and the infusion sequence was repeated.
Short- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids are synthesized by the mammary gland and the infusion of free fatty acids into the abomasum inhibited normal fatty acid synthesis in the mammary gland, which effectively decreased the amount of saturated fatty acids in milk fat.

The abomasum is the fourth stomach of the cow, which is similar to ours.
The cow was cast and rolled but to ensure the abomasum stayed where it should, two small holes were made and a stitch was placed through the skin and abomasal wall.

The degraded fibre, which is now in the lower liquid part of the rumen-reticulum, then passes into the next chamber, the omasum, where water and many of the inorganic mineral elements are absorbed into the blood stream.
After this the digesta is moved to the last chamber, the abomasum.
The food in the abomasum is digested much like it would be in a simple-stomached monogastric animal (such as a human or pig).

In contrast to the mature cow, in the calf, the abomasum is the largest compartment of the stomach (table 1).

Cattle Today: RUMEN DEVELOPMENT AND FUNCTION IN BEEF CATTLE
The abomasums is often referred to as the “True Stomach” and is very similar to our stomach and that of other monogastrics (animals having only a single stomach system).
As the feed passes into the abomasum, gastric juices secreted by the abomasum are mixed with the ingesta, producing a material about the same consistency of that in the rumen.
The ingesta passes rapidly through the abomasum into the lower tract, where digestion is completed in a similar manner to simple stomached animals.

Digesta flowing from the abomasum to the small intestines is composed of small particles suspended in liquid digesta.

Nutritional Scours in Milk-fed Calves: Causes and Treatment
The initial digestion of milk occurs in the abomasum (or fourth stomach) and this progresses further in the intestines.
Digestion in the abomasum requires an acidic environment which kills most pathogens present, yet also encourages the growth of bacteria (Lactobacilli) that assist in digestion of the milk protein.
Without the protective acidic environment in the abomasum, calves would quickly become infected when they first suckle from the cow's udder, which is usually contaminated with some faeces, or from other pathogens they may consume in the process of eating or chewing on things in the calf shed or paddock.

The abomasum's function is to begin chemical digestion of digesta not degraded in the rumen.
The enzyme, renin, is secreted in the abomasum and aids in the digestion of milk by clotting milk protein in the abomasum, causing a slower release of milk into the small intestine.
As the protein enters the abomasum and small intestine, it is enzymatically digested to amino acids which are absorbed in the small intestine.

It functions as the gateway to the abomasum, filtering large particles back to the reticulorumen and allowing fine particles and fluid to be passed to the abomasum.
The abomasum is also known as the "true stomach." It functions much like the human stomach producing acid and some enzymes to start protein digestion.
