  MSN Encarta - Abominable Snowman
Abominable Snowman or Yeti, legendary wild man of the Himalayas.
Contemporary reports of the Abominable Snowman, therefore, are regarded by some as little more than modern variations on an ancient mythological theme, and some sightings have indeed proved to be hoaxes.
Skeptics interpret the Abominable Snowman sightings as a reflection of the modern fascination with the wild and the popular sense that a few pockets of wilderness remain in a world dominated by civilization.

Yeti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The yeti, also known as the abominable snowman, is a supposed large primate-like creature reported to live in the Himalayas.
The term is also often used to refer to reported ape-like creatures that fit any of these descriptions: for example, the fear liath may be referred to as the "Scottish yeti".
Also notable was Lieutenant Colonel C.K. Howard-Bury, inadvertently responsible for coining the term "abominable snowman" While leading a group on Mount Everest in 1921, Howard-Bury's expedition discovered many footprints at about 20,000 feet in altitude.

 Abominable Snowman
The name "Abominable Snowman" has been given to the animal; the implication, of course, is that it is some sort of giant primate.
Thus the "abominable snowman" would seem, on the basis of the best evidence now available, to be no other than the Himalayan red bear.
Discarded sandals were examined but were not saved, for the "Abominable Snowman" was considered to be the product of the imagination of men who saw "animal" tracks that had been enlarged by melting of the snow.

In addition to climbing Mount Everest in 1953, one of the major goals of Sir Edmund Hillary in the Himalayas was to spy on Chinese rocket experiments and disprove the existence of the "Abominable Snowman," although he did this on a return trip in 1960-61.
At a monastery in Pangboche, Nepal, he was presented with a "scalp" made from the skin of a serow, a creature similar to a goat herded by Sherpas, that he thought was evidence enough that the creature was a hoax, but he was also presented with a skeletal hand.

The DVD Maniacs - Forum - The Abominable Snowman(1957)
Abominable Snowman(1957) is a more effective film in suggesting terror than Blair Witch Project(1999) for a couple of reasons.
First, the former does show bits and pieces of the yeti which is more imaginative than not showing anything of the witch at all as the latter.
Second, the fear and terror felt by the characters in The Abominable Snowman(1957) feels geniune unlike in Blair Witch Project where emotions of fear and terror feel manipulated and forced.

 Abominable Snowman, Himalayan beast
The natives called the beast "rakshas," which means "demon." This appears to be first report of the Snowman made by a Westerner.
Then, in 1913, reports surfaced that a group of Chinese hunters had wounded and captured a hairy man-like creature, that the locals soon named the "snowman".
However, tracks left in snow tend to enlarge when exposed to direct sun, and this may well explain many of the accounts of Snowman tracks, since smaller tracks of native animals tend to spread under warmth.

Anomalies Article: The Alma and Yeti: Wildmen of Asia
Scientists believe the Alma and Yeti are surviving ancestors of our own species; but until specimens are caught, living or dead, final proof is missing.
There is much disagreement on both what the word 'Yeti' means, and where the name 'Abominable Snowman' -- the common Western and European name for the beasts -- came from (there doesn't appear to be any explaination of the word 'Alma' yet).
According to Sir Edmund Hillary in his article in the 1961 World Book Encyclopedia, 'Yeti' is believed to have originally meant "all-devouring creature"; however, according to Jenny Randles in her book Strange & Unexplained Mysteries of the 20th Century, the word is from the Sherpa Yeh-teh meaning 'rock thing.'
