Loss of HMS Aboukir, HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue
The weather was too bad for destroyers to be at sea and unfortunately Euryalus had to drop out due to lack of coal and weather damage to her wireless, Rear Admiral Christian had to remain with his ship rather than transfer to another ship as the weather was too bad to transfer.
At first Drummond thought that Aboukir had been mined and signalled the other two cruisers to close and assist but he soon realised that it was a torpedo attack and ordered the other cruisers away, but too late.
Although the submarine threat at the time was not considered, even by critics of the patrol, the fact that the three ships didn't zigzag was criticised by the board of inquiry, a practice that was widely ignored at the time and even by some ships after the loss of the three cruisers.

200 Hundred Year Aniversery of Aboukir Bay
In the afternoon of August 1st, Nelson found the French Naval squadron at Aboukir Bay (at the Canopus mouth of the Nile).
Aboukir Bay was protected on the west by a shoal that had enough overhang to the north to cover over a thousand yards of the bay from the north as well.
Several of the French ships captured at Aboukir Bay were repaired and served in the Royal Navy.

The Aboukir was leading, and the Hogue and the Cressy were at stations about two miles in her rear.
The Aboukir was the vessel first attacked and torpedoed, and it was whilst the Hogue and the Cressy had closed in and were standing by to save the crew that they also were torpedoed.
The sinking of the Aboukir was of course an ordinary hazard of patrolling duty.

As soon as it was seen that the Aboukir was in danger of sinking all the boats were sent away from the Cressy, and a picket boat was hoisted out without steam up.
I have the honour to report as follows concerning the sinking of the Hogue, Aboukir, and Cressy: Between 6.15 and 6.30 a.m., H.M.S. Aboukir was struck by a torpedo.
Two lifeboats were sent to the Aboukir, but before the launch could get away the Hogue was struck on the starboard side amidships by two torpedoes at intervals of ten to twenty seconds.

First World War.com - Primary Documents - Sinking of the Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue by the U-9, 22 September 1914
There were a fountain of water, a burst of smoke, a flash of fire, and part of the cruiser rose in the air.
The Aboukir had been stricken in a vital spot and by an unseen force; that made the blow all the greater.
But I had stayed on top long enough to see the other cruisers, which I learned were the Cressy and the Hogue, turn and steam full speed to their dying sister, whose plight they could not understand, unless it had been due to an accident.

 HMS Aboukir
It was an assignment for which the armored cruisers were horribly ill equipped—they were known as the "live bait squadron"—and their deployment to safer waters had been discussed by Admiral of the Fleet Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill, and others at a meeting on September 17, 1914.
Five days later, at about 0630, Aboukir and her sister ships HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue were patrolling the Broad Fourteens, an area of the North Sea between Yarmouth and Ymuiden; due to the poor weather, they were without any destroyer escorts.
A single torpedo broke Aboukir in two and she sank in twenty-five minutes with the loss of 527 men in about 52°18N, 3°41E.

The French attempt to exert influence over Egypt was due to economics, a political need to weaken Britain and the personal needs of General Napoleon Bonaparte, who saw the shadow of unemployment - and a loss of influence - looming as his armies in Italy were nearing the end of their successful struggles against Austria.
Forming large squares that incorporated cannon the French waited for the Mameluke assault under Murad Bey and when it came repulsed the attacks with steady, disciplined fire.

France’s enemies were much encouraged by the great victory and the victor himself became Baron Nelson of the Nile.

In May 1797 Napoleon, the best-known but still just one of several French generals, took ship from Toulon with an army bound for Egypt, escorted by Admiral Brueys with 13 sail of the line.
Brueys' fleet was left at anchor at Aboukir Bay, his flagship L'Orient being too big to enter Alexandria harbour, and had been there for three weeks when finally Nelson found it on July 29th.
While the two fleets were matched in numbers, Brueys had a slight edge in size: Nelson had thirteen 74-gun ships and the 50-gun Leander, while Brueys' flagship mounted 120 guns and he had two 80- gun vessels as well as nine 74s, plus four frigates, two sloops and three bomb vessels.

The French troops in Egypt were in great danger when the naval disaster of Aboukir, inflicted by Nelson, had cut them off from Europe.
Failing to effect the surrender of Acre, and as his army was suffering from the plague (May, 1799), he had to make his way back to Egypt.
There he re-established French prestige by the victory of Aboukir (25 July, 1799), then, learning that the Second Coalition was gaining immense successes against the armies of the Directory, he left Kléber in Egypt and returned secretly to France.
