Floydian Slip(tm) : The Pink Floyd Experience > Albums > David Gilmour > About Face
After at least two albums of turmoil, Waters had left the group to go on to "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking," a concept he had as far back as 1978, when he presented rough demos to Floyd, along with demos of "The Wall." (Floyd chose the latter as its follow-up to 1977's "Animals.")
Gilmour produced the album along with Bob Ezrin, who had been involved with Floyd since 1979's "The Wall." It was recorded in Paris at Pathe-Marconi Studios.
Gilmour followed the album's release with a 15-week tour of nearly a dozen countries, beginning in Ireland on March 31.

Only problem: a new album was about to come out and the band struggled with the idea of putting "Disconnected" on the new record.
The resultant album face to face lives up to its self-titled promise, defining the full range and intensity of the band's sound.

Perhaps the greatest criticism of the album is the heavy handed use of strings to the point of being almost pretentious.
The album opens with the title track, mostly consisting of guitars, drums and an organ in the background."Tower of Babel" is also a good song, one of my favorites.

Floydian Slip(tm) : The Pink Floyd Experience > Albums > Pink Floyd > A Momentary Lapse of Reason
While the 1987 album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" had the name Pink Floyd on the cover, the inner photos were more telling: There was David Gilmour, and there was Nick Mason, but the rest of the Floyds were not to be found.
The names of nearly 20 musicians and singers were listed on the album, with Gilmour and Bob Ezrin, who had first worked with the group on "The Wall," co-producing the effort.
The album, tentatively titled "Delusions of Maturity," "Of Promises Broken," and "Signs of Life" at one time or another, was released in September 1987, shortly after Waters's "Radio K.A.O.S." "Momentary Lapse" debuted at number 43 in the United States on Sept. 26, and went on to climb as high as number three.

 Punknews.org | Face To Face - Reactionary
After IIB, Face to Face decided to return to their roots of fast punk rock (thank God!) with their new album, Reactionary.
However, excluding songs two and three, the album was suprisingly dissappointing to me. "Out of Focus" might be one of F2F's all time best songs, and the next track "What's in a Name" is also one of their best songs ever, right up there with "I used to think" and "1,000 times".
If any album, reactionary was when they sold out because they intentionally changed their sound to go back to a more profitable fanbase.

I found the About Face album to be disappointing, and since he was playing to half-filled theaters I had to conclude that other people felt the same way about it at the time.
About Face is OK. I think at the time of this album, was a very difficult time as the crisis between Dave and Roger was at its peek.I mean lets face it this was put out the next year after the "Final Cut".Murder is a great track however.
About Face IMO is more an album of high and low points.'Near the End' for example is one of my all time favourites.

If you listen to About Face and Roger Water's Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (relaeased a year earelier), you can HEAR the two components that once were Pink Floyd - Waters has all the concept and deep, biting lyrics, while Gilmour has the voice, is unbeatable with a guitar and makes the music SOUND good.
Floyd purists will dismiss this album as too "pop", and it does depart sharply from the obsessiveness of The Final Cut, but no one can deny that this is ear candy (in a good way) straight through, with some of Gilmour's best guitar work, since he was free to do as he pleased.
However, the album finds Gilmour in control and doing things his way--Pete Townshend wrote the lyrics for two of the songs ("Love On The Air" & "All Lovers Are Deranged"), but otherwise, Gilmour wrote all of the tracks on the album himself--and David does have quite a few surprises up his sleeve here.

Perhaps, this album is result of looking for another directions in music industry. It is very different from David's privious work- a self titled album from 1978 (that is must for any PF fan).
Given the circumstances it's no surprise that About Face is a confused mix of vast Floydian ambition and a grim determination to be 'current'.
However the real reason to buy this LP is Gilmour's astonishing guitar playing, it was About Face that saw the birth of Gilmour's now legendary sound, a huge wailing, blues-drenched howl that set the blueprint for all his subsequent Pink Floyd activity.

John Lee Hooker - Face to Face (Album Review)
It could be anyone adding the exquisite guitar, bass, and keyboard accompaniments to the album’s 15 tracks; that they happen to be such well-known performers merely makes the album marketable on a broader scale.
Though each song explores the blues from a variety of vastly different perspectives, all are held together by his singularly signature style as well as his peerlessly emotive and captivating growl.
Indeed, it would be a simple matter to dismiss Face to Face as yet another effort that surrounds a legend with an array of special guests, or worse, one that tries to capitalize upon his death.

"In the Face": The Story Behind the Music
This new medium kept the noise level of the entire recording extremely low, but since the album was only released on vinyl and cassette, no one has ever been able to hear the songs the way they originally sounded in the studio until their re-release on CD in 1999.
At the center of the recording and the sound of 'In the Face' was a Synclavier, a very expensive synthesizer / sampler that Eric had acquired which, along with his skills and credentials as a producer, set Studio A apart from other local studios.
The recently purchased Synclavier was used extensively throughout the album, along with the 'big drums' effects which were so pervasive in 80s releases.

DAVID GILMOUR About Face review by ClemofNazareth(Bob)
About Face is a pretty mild second solo effort by Dave Gilmour.
Taken in the context of the time it was released, this is not a bad album, but it’s unlikely to be found in too many collections another twenty years from now either.
This is a fairly straightforward 80’s soft rock tune about a typical 80’s soft topic — some sort of nebulous paranoid world-view of the impact of technology and progress on personal relationships.

DAVID GILMOUR About Face review by zdlvv6
Released in response to the hiatus in Pink Floyd, About Face reveals that Gilmour not Waters was in fact the Floyd master of melody.
While the album lacks Waters' biting lyrics and an omnious concept, it more than makes up for it with a wonderful variety of musical styles, melodious vocals, and of course soaring guitar licks.
While it is not quite as good as Gilmour's solo debut album(a neglected classic) nor is it as progressive as Pink Floyd was in the early 70s, About Face is still an excellent rock album flowing with as much or even more melody as most any Floyd album.

A true-blooded, unadulterated folk singer, Kate Rusby delivers her fifth album of regenerated traditional tunes and original compositions that complement the rootsy sensibility of the story-based songs from her childhood.
While she covers a Nic Jones tune and brings sweet voice to a number she learned from her parents, Rusby shines strongest on her own songs, including "Young James" and the gently drawn title track that movingly ends the album.
The lovely worship song "Everlasting" is the first single to Christian radio and serves as a solid introduction to this new singer/songwriter's considerable talents.

The type of album one would put on and let flow to play some golf, slug back a couple of brews, or go fishing, preferably with the solitude of an island.
On an Island, though I may have given the impression that it is by describing the orchestration, is not a extravagant album.
Where his former band mate Roger Waters usually strives for pretentious, self-indulgent albums, Gilmour is on the other side of the spectrum- just sticking to what he‘s always done, in a modest way.
