Last night my friend Gerry and I went out to dinner in Park Slope and, later, for a drink at Great Lakes, though we were done with all of it by midnight.
Taymor's film was less Taymor than I was hoping--I have so much admiration for her vision and imagination, but was disappointed in what seemed to be a cliche-ridden script that was handed to her.
I've been watching CBS coverage and last night sat at a bar with a handful of folks, one of whom may or may not have been Peter Sarsgaard, watching Justine Henin and her backhand take down Serena Williams.

I'm not talking about the ersatz mass murders that are the subject matter of your average Hollywood shoot-'em-up, but the real wrong thing itself, the knowledge of which is not normally accessible to young people, least of all by going to the local multiplex.
Except for postmodern war movies, the only commercial films I know that seek to show death in all its hideousness are the ones that contain execution scenes.
There is a certain embarrassment about being a storyteller in these times when stories are considered not quite as satisfying as statements and statements not quite as satisfying as statistics; but in the long run, a people is known, not by its statements or its statistics, but by the stories it tells.

 Out & About
Last night the Metropolitan Opera held a small reception for the new exhibit at the Gallery Met, the gallery's first solo show: "Stage Fright" by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca.
Thursday, the night of their winter gala, began for most with a stop home to slip into something formal, followed by the trip to Avery Fisher Hall for the concert conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen (and featuring a world premiere of his composition).
There were two book parties last night, for Michael Musto, who has published a collection of his columns in the Village Voice, and for Patricia Marx, the humorist who showed her talents delivering a purim shpliel at a Jewish Museum gala a couple of years ago.

I suppose it's possible for a playwright to write a good play about a writer, but the temptation to sink into a nice warm bath of self-serving self-indulgence is apparently too great for ordinary mortals to overcome.
Last night my book club met, and we had a special guest, Katherine Min, author of Secondhand World.
I have much to tell about the past couple of weeks, and I'm looking forward to telling it, but I'll have to do so in dribs and drabs, rather than in the nice tight chronological narrative I'd originally planned to post.

There's nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (cocreator of TV's thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn't make it bad or dull.
While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion.
Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore's understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle.
