  "About a Boy" - Salon
Love is all around in "About a Boy," but it's tucked into the nooks and crannies between wicked wisecracks, cruel-to-be-kind words and lots of eye-rolling.
More specifically, "About a Boy" is about the way human beings trade information and observations and feelings with one another, and about how others can sometimes make you see your way toward being the person you didn't even know you wanted to be.
Without being churlish or mean, "About a Boy" shows us how hard it is for parents to grow up, too, suggesting that letting your child become his or her own person might be the final and most important (not to mention the most difficult) act of shedding your own childhood.

About a Boy (2002) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
based on nick hornby's best-selling novel, about a boy is the story of a cynical, immature young man who is taught how to act like a grown-up by a little boy.
About A Boy is about real human relationships against the backdrop of regular present day living.
The premise of this film: young boy teaching a grown man how to grow up, might be regarded as too simplistic, or unoriginal, but somehow, the combination of fine performances and a better than average script work to create a film whose message is welcome, rather than obnoxious.

If one chooses to use such a situation toward altruistic ends, or at the very least a venture that can provide some personal fulfillment, it says something about who that person is. On the other hand, if one squanders the opportunity on a totally self-absorbed, shallow existence, it says even more.
Entertaining, as well as insightful, `About A Boy' gives a truly fresh perspective to an element of the human condition that has been explored before, but rarely as effectively.

Altogether, About a Boy stands out against more juvenile fare like Spider-Man and the new Star Wars as one of the only "adult" stories to be found of late on the big screen.

Meanwhile, as Marcus tries to detach himself from the unhealthy environment of his home and the pressures at school, the boy begins seeking Will on a daily basis, until the annoyed bachelor succumbs, letting the boy into his trendy home and his guilt-free life.
Still, About a Boy builds its comedy successfully by observing Will's initial inability to handle Marcus, and by emphasizing the innocence with which Marcus judges Will's extreme idleness.
In spite of the film's ability to exploit Grant's magnetism, About a Boy is most winning not when it plays with Will's disinterest in love, but when it examines Marcus' need for it.

 About a boy
Lycurgus, the ancient Spartan ruler, said that no boy could be a good citizen if he hadn’t slept with a man. In fact, he supposedly passed a law requiring all adult men to engage in a relationship with a young boy.
While they’re not often talked about, such intergenerational desires are actually fairly common, as far as sexual “perversions” go.
Furthermore, it’s very difficult for researchers to contact young boys in such relationships, because obviously they are usually kept secret (or at least, not advertised).
