Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem.
The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert.
This is followed by a complete study of the fine œuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies.

Bloemaert nevertheless was able to execute commissions for large altarpieces in both the northern and southern Netherlands.
Marcel G. Roethlisberger of Geneva, the world's foremost Bloemaert scholar, states in the show's catalog essay that to present an exhibit of such a little-known artist is far more daring than to assemble a blockbuster of well-known artists or schools.

Abraham Bloemaert, whose career spanned more than 50 years, adapted to several major changes in prevailing artistic styles.
As the master of many important Dutch painters, including Terbrugghen, van Bijlert, and Honthorst, Bloemaert is considered one of most important and influential Dutch artists of the early 17th century.
Marcel Roethlisberger has deduced that this change, along with the later addition of the foreground foliage, was the result of a reworking (for an unknown reason) that led to Bloemaert's decision to add a second signature.

In addition to the table carpet it is interesting that St. Augustine wears a cope of fine Venetian brocaded silk the design of which is after an early Brussa velvet (4) and St Gregory wears a Gothic brocaded velvet cope.
This is almost identical to the print by Cornelis Bloemaert (3b) and may well be the actual model for it.

Description: This sketch of an old man is by Abraham Bloemaert or his workshop.
Done in the larger of the two standard sizes of heads, it is the only one with a shaved face and a bare throat, the only one to show a dynamic, baroque movement.
So exceptional for Bloemaert is that it was perhaps not done from life but from some pictorial model; unlike the other heads, it does not recur in other paintings." We look forward to Professor Roethlisberger visiting us and determining whether it is by Bloemaert or his workshop.
