Educating Father Abraham: The Meaning of Fatherhood   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Abraham, the new man, is to be the founder of a new nation steeped in God's new way, which this nation is to carry as a light unto all the nations of the world.
Abraham resists the suggestion, partly out of disbelief, partly out of his attachment to his first-born; but the reader is given to understand that, to overstate the point, Abraham is here with Ishmael undergoing basic training, as it were, just practicing to become the father of Isaac.
Abraham, called by God to be the father of a new nation that will carry God's righteous ways to the rest of the world, is educated by God Himself in the proper roles of father and founder, and proves his readiness in his final test.

Educating Father Abraham: The Meaning of Wife   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Traveling in the land of Gerar, Abraham (although the narrator here again insists that she is his wife) announces to the nations that Sarah is his sister (20:2), and Abimelech ("father of the king"), king of Gerar, sends for Sarah and takes her for his harem.
Abraham at the beginning acts as if the promise of becoming a great nation can be realized by himself acting alone; thus preoccupied with his own survival, he doubly "sacrifices" his wife-first by denying her wifeliness and then by abandoning her to Pharaoh's harem-symbolically enacting his belief in his own self- sufficiency.
Abraham is led from the natural toward the marital and legal, from an outlook that says that "incest is best" or that "any woman will do" to an outlook that makes instituted exogamous marriage the sacred norm.

Posthumous publications of Cahan's writings include two volumes of The Education of Abraham Cahan (1969), a translation of his Yiddish autobiography, and Grandma Never Lived in America: The New Journalism of Abraham Cahan, a collection of articles and short stories that was published in 1986.
