The Lincoln Way is too firmly established upon the map of the United States and in the minds and hearts of the people as a great, useful and everlasting memorial to Abraham Lincoln to warrant any skepticism as to the attitude of those States crossed by the route.
The Lincoln Highway was officially marked and dedicated to the memory of Abraham Lincoln on September 1, 1928.

Abraham's father, Thomas Lincoln, was born in Rockingham County in backcountry Virginia in 1778.
Lincoln and a colleague declared that slavery was "founded on both injustice and bad politics, but the promulgation of abolitionist doctrine tends rather to increase than abate its evil." Lincoln was against slavery, but he favored lawful means of achieving its destruction.
Lincoln promised to recognize the new government if two conditions were met: the new government outlawed slavery; and the number of those voting for the new government was at least 10 percent of those who had voted in the 1860 presidential election.

Just as Lincoln may have ordered the killing of Jefferson Davis and his Cabinet by Ulrich Dahlgren and his men, Judah Benjamin and Jefferson Davis were involved in the plans to kidnap and later assassinate Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln was viewed as a threat to the established order of things, and he was assassinated as a result.
In 1906 Chiniquy said that "the President, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated by the priests and the Jesuits of Rome." In 1856 Chiniquy had been defended in court by Lincoln.

Again, the bridge, now called the Eustace Bridge, was repaired only to be once again swept away by flood in 1858 with this same high water destroying the recently rebuilt free bridge downstream.
The Dixon Telegraph" at that time stated that the bridge was rebuilt and repaired "without stopping a single train." On May 10, 1866, the middle span of the free bridge went down, was repaired and again, in 1868, was destroyed by high water and floating ice jams.
bridge was dedicated as a memorial to the soldiers of Dixon and Lee County that had served their country in World War I. Built at a cost of $166,000, the bridge was a joint fmancial effort of both the city and the county.

Before a bridge was built across the river, trains were transported across the river in the winter on the ice and in warmer weather they crossed on a ferry.
In 1928 and 1929, a new bridge was built across the Missouri, near the CandNW railroad by Blair, Nebraska.
The bridge was named the "Abraham Lincoln Memorial Bridge" although the road was no longer officially the Lincoln Highway.
