Abraham Mignon is regarded as one of the most faithful followers of Jan Davidsz de Heem.
The curved bowl of Mignon's large, dark green roemer (similar to the example displayed in the adjacent case), which has been placed upside down on the table, contains the reflection of a window, and in the window a church tower, one of many which the cathedral city of Utrecht then boasted.
The richness of the materials and the variety of objects portrayed gave Mignon ample opportunity to display his expertise in the rendering of texture (especially the purple Spanish grapes).

Some of the finest of van Huysums fruit and flower pieces have been in English private collections: those of 1723 in the earl of Ellesmeres gallery, others of 1730-1732 in the collections of Hope and Ashburton.

Mignon built the composition up with great care: from small objects in the left foreground, like the orange and the oysters on the flat pewter plate, to large items towards the back on the right, such as the pumpkin and the gold cup.
Mignon demonstrates just how skilfully he could handle perspective in the lid of the gold cup, lying on the table.
