A Pennsylvania native, Abraham Sinkov graduated from the City College of New York in 1927.
The new generation took on the challenges of electromechanical cipher machines and their efforts were especially fruitful against the enciphered messages of the expanding Japanese empire m the late 1930s.
By this time, Abraham had left the Washington, D.C., area to head a signals intercept station in Panama, a locale of special importance due both to its ideal position for snaring cross-continental messages and to the strategic Panama Canal.

Sinkov statistic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sinkov statistics, also known as log-weight statistics, is a specialized field of statistics that was developed by Abraham Sinkov, while working for the small Signal Intelligence Service organization, the primary mission of which was to compile codes and ciphers for use by the U.S. Army.
Sinkov did not explain the theoretical underpinnings of his statistics, or characterized its distribution, nor did he give a decision procedure for accepting or rejecting candidate plaintexts on the basis of their S
The situation becomes more difficult when comparing strings of different lengths because Sinkov does not explain how the distribution of his statistics changes with length, especially when applied to higher-order grams.

Most people, acquainted with cryptology either through sensational cloak and dagger stories or through newspaper cryptograms, are not aware that many aspects of this art may be treated systematically, by means of some elementary mathematical concepts and methods.
In this introduction, Professor Sinkov explains some of the fundamental techniques at the basis of cryptanalytic endeavor from which much more sophisticated techniques have evolved, especially since the advent of computers.
The mathematical topics relevant in these discussions include modular arithmetic, a little number theory, some linear algebra of two dimensions with matrices, some combinatorics, and a little statistics.

While I have no personal knowledge of the invention itself, there are several historical facts which may be of interest.
The application date, 1933, was three years after Friedman hired three topnotch mathematicians into the new Signal Intelligence Service;--Frank Rowlett, Abraham Sinkov, and Solomon Kullback.
This invention was one of several developed during this period, all of which were put under Patent Secrecy Orders.

Friedman chose personnel who had a good background in mathematics and at least one foreign language - French, German, Spanish and, most importantly, Japanese.
A high-school teacher from New York, Abraham Sinkov, filled the French spot; Solomon Kullback, a Brooklynite, the German spot; and John B. Hurt, a superb linguist, the Japanese spot.
As tensions mounted in Asia, the Japanese sent their diplomatic messages in codes developed by an electromagnetic enciphering machine.

Mauborgne refused to discuss his own cryptologic organization but recommended a person who might be able to organize a cryptanalytic bureau for Canada, Herbert O. Yardley.

In 1938, the US crypt-analyst Abraham Sinkov described the then most modern machine ciphers as almost unbeatable.
One of those machines was the Third Reich's Enigma; only two years after Sinkov's words it was being broken almost continuously, not by extraordinary new technology but by new ways of solving mathematical problems.
Enigma was a modern cipher, not unlike DES, depending upon large numbers of combinations for its security.
