Family and friends of Yehuda Abraham this week were putting the final touches on raising $10 million to bail out the 76-year-old Manhattan diamond merchant charged by federal prosecutors in connection with an international plot to sell anti-aircraft missile launchers to shoot down American commercial planes.
In arguing against bail for Abraham, assistant U.S. attorney Jeffrey Clark contended that the gem dealer understood “the illegal nature of what he was involved in,” while at the same time admitting that federal authorities had no evidence that Abraham knew the underlying reasons for the money transfer, according to press reports.
In fact, the federal complaint filed against Abraham does not indicate that he was aware that the money the authorities accuse him of transferring was part of an illegal arms deal, The New York Times noted, adding that Judge Pisano cited the government’s lack of evidence as a factor in his decision to set bail.

The bombing led to a crackdown by the British which included the passing of the death sentence on 18 suspected members of the Stern Group, a splinter grouping from Irgun formed in 1940 by a radical Polish Jew, Abraham Stern, to carry out covert operations against the British.
