Wald's paper was also the first proof of the existence of an equilibrium in a G.E. setting in economics.
Wald was a mathematician and thus, naturally, had a tenuous understanding of the "economic" significance of his work.
Wald was himself dismissed immediately by the Nazis, which led him to leave Austria and accept an invitation from the Cowles Commission.

Wald was allowed to attend the University of Cluj but it appears that this was not made easy for him because he was Jewish.
Wald reported to the seminar on his work in econometrics, in particular he wrote a paper for the seminar on the existence of a solution to the competitive economic model.
Wald was the first to solve the general problem of sequential tests of statistical hypotheses.

Abraham Wald (October 31 1902 Kolozsvár, Hungary (now Cluj, Romania) - December 13 1950 Travancore, India) was a mathematician who contributed to decision theory, geometry, and econometrics, and founded the field of statistical sequential analysis.
Being a religious Jew, he could not attend school on Saturdays, as was required at the time by the Hungarian school system, and was thus home-schooled by his parents until college (no disadvantage for him, as his parents were quite knowledgeable and competent as teachers).

 Kohler Biographies
Abraham Wald was born in Klausenburg, Hungary (which later became Cluj, Rumania).
Eventually, Wald taught statistics at Columbia University (his students remember him as a superb teacher of unrivalled clarity and precision), but his career was cut short by an airplane crash during a lecture tour of India.
Although he had forerunners, Wald was the first to formulate mathematically and solve generally the problem of sequential tests of statistical hypotheses.

Abraham Wald's equilibrium existence proof reconsidered
In order to clarify its role in Wald's proof, the question of existence of an equilibrium for a modified version of the Walras-Cassel model is reduced to the solvability of a related variational inequality problem.
For his proof of the existence of a general competitive equilibrium Abraham Wald assumed a strictly pseudomonotone inverse market demand function or, equivalently, that market demand satisfies the Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference.
We provide an elementary induction proof which demonstrates the essence of Abraham Wald's famous contribution.

However his outstanding abilities in mathematics led him to wish to continue to undertake mathematical research and in 1927 he entered the University of Vienna to study with Karl Menger.

Wald test -   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Wald test is a statistical test, typically used to test whether an effect exists or not.
Under the Wald statistical test, named after Abraham Wald, the maximum likelihood estimate of the parameter(s) of interest \widehat\theta is compared with the proposed value \theta, with the assumption that the difference between the two will be approximately normal.
For example, asking whether R=1 is the same as asking whether log R = 0; but the Wald statistic for R=1 is not the same as the Wald statistic for log R = 0 (because there is in general no neat relationship between the standard errors of R and log R).
