Abre los ojos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) is a 1997 film directed by Alejandro Amenábar and written by him and Mateo Gil.
It stars Eduardo Noriega as César, a successful and handsome young man in Madrid who becomes severely disfigured in an automobile crash and then undergoes some disorienting experiences.
The overall plot device and themes of unreality in Abre los ojos are very similar to those employed in the novel Ubik by Philip K. Dick.

 Encyclopedia: Abre Los Ojos
This at least gives Abre Los Ojos a decided edge over Vanilla Sky, where the audience is left continually questioning why the Tom Cruise character would want her when he could have Cameron Diaz instead.
Were it to be judged entirely on its own merits, I think Abre Los Ojos would stand strongly as a flawed but intriguing science fiction/psychological thriller from a talented young Spanish director.
Abre Los Ojos is an interesting little film that many viewers may find more satisfying than its overproduced Hollywood remake.

 DVD Times - Vanilla Sky
Abre Los Ojos as a film exists in a permanent state between what is real and what is a dream, and just when you think you are finally ahead of the plot, another story element enters that was never even hinted at earlier in the film.
Abre Los Ojos scores marks for being the original, creative piece of filmmaking, and Vanilla Sky betters many elements of Amenábar's film but fails on many other elements, making it even harder to choose between the two.
Whether you prefer the original Abre Los Ojos version or the Cameron Crowe remake Vanilla Sky, it is fair to say that Vanilla Sky has been given the best DVD release in Region 1 land, with fantastic picture and sound quality and some decent if very sparse extras.

American Drama: Tom Cruise and the Seven Dwarves: Cinematic Postmodernisms in Abre los ojos and Vanilla Sky
As we will see, Abre los ojos and Vanilla Sky both incorporate a postmodern stance toward filmic representation as they revision the genre of the psychological thriller in order to question the possibility of certain knowledge.
Abre los ojos and Vanilla Sky focus on the efforts of the films' respective protagonists, accused of committing murders neither remembers, to reconstruct their pasts and the circumstances surrounding the murders.
Each protagonist, César in Abre los ojos and David Ames in Vanilla Sky, was formerly a young man supremely content with the good fortune of being both wealthy and handsome (César is played by Spanish heartthrob Eduardo Noriega, David by the iconic Tom Cruise).

Ojos is part Matrix, part Total Recall, part Fatal Attraction, and like The Crying Game in both its Hitchcockian twists and the fact there's a central key to both movies that one cannot reveal without destroying a newbie's enjoyment.
But Abre Los Ojos only needs a woman on whom the hero can hang his heart; Sofia is an ideal of female beauty that need only mesmerize and engender obsession by virtue of her appearance.
Abre Los Ojos could even be read as a postmodern fable about the perils of bedhopping and the nasty things that can happen to a sexually promiscuous young man.

DVD Times - Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)
Because the director of Abre Los Ojos, Alejandro Amenábar, allowed the remake, he was given funding by Tom Cruise's production company for his first Hollywood project, the tremendously old-fashioned horror tale The Others, which has since made him the toast of Hollywood.
Many will be disappointed, as Abre Los Ojos is essentially the same film as Vanilla Sky minus the extra dosage of pop-culture references from Cameron Crowe, therefore leaving students of the two films none the wiser.
Abre Los Ojos is a film that mixed these notions, and it encourages us to 'open our eyes' and grasp reality, even if it might be out of reach.

Abre Los Ojos is less majestic but it successfully achieves a level of authenticity through economies of scale.
However, it was in Abre Los Ojos that I understood and appreciated the story and I thought the film's resolution was more clear-cut and more affecting.
While one is a blueprint for the other to improvise on, I can't help but say that in the end, Abre Los Ojos figuratively opened my eyes, stayed longer in memory and made me appreciate the vanilla sky in Vanilla Sky.

 Obre Los Ojos
Ojos introduces the sci-fi angle earlier in the film through a series of clearer hints and allusions.
Ojos' main character, Cruise's later counterpart, Cesar, played well by Eduardo Noriega, begins to realize what his situation may be sooner, and he is more accepting of it when it comes.
All in all, Abre los Ojos is not only an earlier film, but a younger, more innocent perspective on the story.

Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Spanish romantic thriller, "Abre Los Ojos," became the catalyst for "Vanilla Sky." Producer Paula Wagner says the film appealed to her, Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe, and it offered an opportunity for them to work together again.
Cruz says she lobbied for the role, which she secretly considered her own, since she had played Sofia in "Abre Los Ojos." It didn't take much to convince Crowe, Cruise and Wagner that she was their Sofia as well.
Although Cruz's part in "Abre Los Ojos" and "Vanilla Sky" are technically the same, Cruz adamantly considers the two Sofias completely different women.

An audacious, psychological thriller, Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes), was so good that Tom Cruise snapped up the remake rights, snared one of its stars, Penelope Cruz, and enlisted Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) to closely rework it.
Amenábar's original film follows a handsome playboy and warps sex, illusion, masks, science fiction and horror into a brilliant puzzle box that will make you wish that Hollywood kept its hands to itself.
"Though little-seen in this country, Abre Los Ojos is a kind of classic of futuristic creepiness, an unnervingly spooky romantic drama that takes the notion of what is reality and what isn't into new and startling directions.

Otherwise known in originally in Spanish as “Abre los ojos” and as “Ouvre les yeux” in France, this film has been largely unheralded on its initial release in 1997 until the recent remake (Vanilla Sky) hit the silver screen.
I can’t say I was expecting too much after reading numerous negative reviews on ‘Vanilla Sky’, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good “Abre los ojos” really is. If you like psychological thrillers, particularly those of a Hitchcock slant, then you’ll enjoy this one.
“Abre los ojos” is not a classic film as such but it’s certainly a very decent film to while away a couple of hours.
