Werner Wunderlich: St Gall: Tradition, Topicality of its Cultural Memory, Media Culture
In about 750 in the Monastery of Freising, the monks had embarked upon the cultural venture of transliterating Latin words and concepts into a vernacular in which there were no spoken, let alone written, equivalents.
Even the first words approximate only roughly to the Latin meanings: abrogans in the sense of remorseful, penitent is rendered as dheomodi, and humilis (humble) becomes samftmoati (gentle, docile): only such approximations were possible, because the corresponding concepts did not yet exist in Germanic languages.
The clerical philologists were highly successful in the efforts to impose Latin graphic and grammatical patterns upon hitherto unwritten vernaculars with sound-systems of their own, whereby they made extensive use of the minuscules, the predecessors of our Antiqua.

The history of the German language begins with the High German consonant shift during the Migration period, separating South Germanic dialects from common West Germanic.
The earliest testimonies of Old High German are from scattered Elder Futhark inscriptions, especially in Alemannic, from the 6th century, the earliest glosses (Abrogans) date to the 8th and the oldest coherent texts (the Hildebrandslied, the Muspilli and the Merseburg Incantations) to the 9th century.
Old Saxon at this time belongs to the North Sea Germanic cultural sphere, and Low German should fall under German rather than Anglo-Frisian influence during the Holy Roman Empire.
