Topic: Absinthe (band)

In the News (Tue 29 Dec 09)

Absinthe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Absinthe (from French, from Latin absinthium, ancient Greek apsinthion, "wormwood") is a high-alcohol anise flavored-liquor derived from herbs including the flowers and leaves of the medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium, also called wormwood.
Absinthe's popularity grew steadily until the 1840's when absinthe was given to French troops as a fever preventative.
Spurred by the temperance movement and winemakers' associations, absinthe was publicized in connection with several violent crimes supposedly committed under the direct influence of the drink, along with a general tendency toward hard liquor consumption due to the wine shortage in France during the 1880s and 1890s, effectively targeting absinthe's popularity as a social menace.

Absinthe, a strongly alcoholic drink with a reputation of mythic proportions, is again in fashion, 90 years after it was banned in France and elsewhere as a cause of madness.
Absinthe was seen as a foreign poison undermining the national resolve just as the decadence of Oscar Wilde and his circle was seen to undermine national culture.
Absinthe became trendy with some rock stars (one ad campaign said, "Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1899"), and it isn't surprising that their experiences of it did not meet those of the introverted Parisian artists that had gone before.

 Absinthe Blind
The guys (and girl) of Absinthe Blind are the most humble group of musicians in the world.
As we were heading out to Thai food in Silverlake, CA I managed to get hopelessly lost with the band in their van that sounded like it was on it’s last legs (or it might have been the massive trailer towed behind full of sound equipment slowing us down).
There are some bands you’ve probably heard of on it, but there are some that we are trying to expose to the public for the first time.

 Absinthe Blind - Rings - openingbands.com
Absinthe Blind's newest release "Rings" may be as close to defining their sound as one can possibly come.
The alternation between the two vocalists allows Absinthe Blind to have vocals that perfectly fit any mood, while the combination of their harmonies brings a new level of intensity and power to the music.
The songs Bands 1 and Bands 2 must also be mentioned for their graceful simplicity and the irritatingly unforgettable line repeated throughout both: "She said playing in bands won't make you well".

Anyone who has ever encountered the band is well aware that they are about as fun a group as one is likely to find, with choreographed songs, matching uniforms, seemingly impossible physical feats, and spazzy rock god/goddess poses all being part and parcel of their standard live show.
The band’s sound, comprised of acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, piano, and occasionally organ, is almost the definition of mainstream popular rock.
On their debut Zwan lives up to the expectations that one might hold of a band that includes half of the Smashing Pumpkins; it is nearly impossible not to compare the two especially since both bands feature Corgan's extremely unique voice.

The band is new to the Memphis scene, though the singer/guitarist used to be in the band The Beep (which was headed by Ken Steorts, formerly of Skillet).
The bulk of the band's set came from its latest full-length release Rings, which features the single "The Break." The band's set closer "She Saves" was the most impressive song, clocking in at about ten minutes long and creating a powerful moment that words really can't accurately describe.
Opening with a strong instrumental, the band plunged into "For No One" and the crowd was drawn in from that point on.

But not to worry, the band members are all continuing to follow their hearts musically and have already launched a variety of side-projects such as Headlights (early versions of Headlights went by various names including Enemies, Enemy, Orphan, and Orphans), Cortisol, The Beauty Shop, and Triple Whip.
The follow-up to Absinthe Blind’s most recent album, the critically acclaimed Everyday Separation, is bolstered by upper-rung songwriting and arranging within the band, and the recording skills and influence of Matt Talbott (Centaur/Hum), Chicago sound-shaman Keith Cleversley (Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips/Spiritualized/The Posies/Hum/etc.), and local producer/engineer Jon Pines (Wilco, etc).

His father, the aged Tescelin, and all his brothers entered Clairvaux as religious, leaving only Humbeline, his sister, in the world and she, with the consent of her husband, soon took the veil in the Benedictine Convent of Jully.
The whole pontifical court was touched by the saintly demeanor of this band of monks.

Absinthe Blind: Everyday Separation Aversion.com Review
There are two ways bands deal with their place in the world: Some look at an existing niche and dive in head first, indulging in all the ready-made conveniences that come with an existing style.
Absinthe Blind, however, takes the alternate, and much more difficult, route on Everyday Separation, as the band stubbornly avoids falling into a niche and instead forces the world to wrap itself around its music.
Absinthe Blind does it with a gentle enough touch as to make its well-picked influences only shadows deep below murky waters whose surfaces dance with reflections of the band’s own light.

The title piece recalls something of Absinthe's nightmare drones but is interrupted with violent outbursts and overall has an appropriately melodramatic horror-flick patina.
