Absolute Beginners is a 1986 slick mod-stylish rock musical movie adapted from Colin MacInnes book Absolute Beginners about life in late 1950s London.
At the time Absolute Beginners was released, the movie was panned by critics and a box office flop, but since then has gained status as a cult movie, in part due to its soundtrack.
The commercial failure of Absolute Beginners and The Mission led to the collapse of Goldcrest, a major British film studio.

The whole drift of film emulsion technology over the past twenty years has been to reduce contrast which is traditionally a 'problem' in todays world where the soft commercial look is so much in fashion.
Only about 10% of this film takes place in the day - as in all Julien's work - and consequently there are always neon's or practicals or TV's featuring in shot and I find that with 5247 at 120ASA (my rating) an aperture of less that T3 starts to make these features loose their brilliance.
In other words the composition should be at it's optimum where the film is seen at it's optimum: in the cinema on a large screen with great sound and an audience that looks at the screen.

 DVD Savant Review: Absolute Beginners
Absolute Beginners is a good takeoff film to compare with the current crop of movie musicals.
Absolute Beginners would have been a great title for extras, as the movie and its subject will be alien to 99% of American viewers, but there are no docus or interviews or commentaries.
Absolute Beginners does have fast cutting, and it is the showcase of a director who favors his sets and designs as much as he does the actors, but when the musical numbers get going, big pieces of performance - the singing and dancing, are left intact.

Most of the music here bears only a coincidental resemblance to the sort of 45s that the Wiz, Dean Swift, and the rest of Colin MacInnes' absolute beginners were buying from department-store gramophone sections in 1950s Britain.
The two numbers with the strongest connections to the music of MacInnes' era are both delights; Slim Gaillard's "Selling Out" reprises the hipster jive of his '50s hits, and Ray Davies recommends the "Quiet Life" over a charming trad jazz arrangement.
Whatever Absolute Beginners lacks in historical accuracy, it makes up for with great songs and savoir faire, and it stands as one of the finest soundtracks from a decade filled with good ones.
