He may be on the outside of the law looking in, but Clint ain't about to let the powers that be get away with this one.
A three-minute argument by Eastwood's thief is enough to convince the mistress's widower of the involvement of the most powerful man on earth.

ABSOLUTE POWER movie review with photos, video
Absolute Power follows Luther as he goes into hiding, then changes his mind and decides to try to bring down the slimy, oversexed and opportunistic chief executive.
For the power of the presidency -- the Absolute Power -- to have impact, the president must be depicted at the center of a swirl of staff, activities and meetings.
At times, Absolute Power is a very good movie, an astute entertainment that escalates the national debate about morality in high places to melodrama.

But a lot of critics seem to want to believe that Absolute Power, Eastwood's new movie as director/star, is better than it is. The film isn't bad, but it's contrived and dawdling, and the slow patches give you plenty of time to reflect on the many implausible moments.
Adapted by screenwriting godhead William Goldman (whose credibility is steadily slipping after The Ghost and the Darkness and The Chamber) from a bestseller by David Baldacci, Absolute Power aims to be entertainment with serious political undertones.
In movies like this, the hero must have a questionable background, or else everyone would listen to him and the movie would be over in five minutes.

Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews: Absolute Power
Absolute Power is the ultimate man against the mob flick, the mob in this case being the power of, and loyalty of Secret Service agents assigned to, the President of the United States.
Absolute Power is also a great "man in the wrong place at the wrong time" story.
On the other hand, there are such stop-you-in-your-tracks faux pas as an additional conspirator who appears and disappears solely to raise the tension levels, and a killing and escape from the middle of a crowded hospital which strains credibility.

CNN - 'Absolute Power' no absolute winner - Feb. 14, 1997
In the movie, a veteran burglar, played by Eastwood, witnesses a murder while trying to pull off the heist of his career.
"Absolute Power" is not a "must-see." But if you're looking for a well-made, grown-up movie, it's worth your time and money.
The movie is rated R for its sexual content, violence and profanity.

In Absolute Power, Hackman's president of the United States has a twirl at a formal party with his chief of staff, Gloria Russell (Judy Davis).
Cobbled together from ancient movie tropes, this worn old shoe of a film treads along dutifully until it stubs its toe on an astonishingly improbable ending.
Absolute Power (R; 121 min.), directed by Clint Eastwood, written by William Goldman, photographed by Jack N. Green and starring Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Ed Harris.

Absolute Power is not among Clint Eastwood greatest films, but it's much better than is usually given credit for.
That scene at the very beginning of the movie is probably the strongest one in it, Eastwood making brilliant use of cinematography, music (and especially the lack of) and his trademark heavy contrasted lighting, and with almost no dialogue at all, it's a remarkably effective scene that overshadows much of the rest of the film.
Absolute Power tries to make its mark on three levels - the thriller level is the only one where it completely succeeds, and it manages to be constantly exciting, gripping and enticing.

Absolute Power - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
A twisty tale of coincidence and deceit that might be subtitled "What the Burglar Saw," "Absolute Power" is Eastwood's 40th starring role and 19th film as a director.
In fact, "Absolute Power," written by veteran William Goldman (from a novel by David Baldacci) and having each of its eight key roles knowingly cast, is a tribute to that increasingly rare commodity, Hollywood professionalism.
"Absolute Power" opens with an extended burglary sequence, shot as calmly and fluidly as the man operates, shadowing Whitney as he breaks into a richly appointed mansion and proceeds to loot a vault room hidden behind a one-way mirror next to the master bedroom.

Clint Eastwood's ``Absolute Power'' is a tight, taut thriller with a twist: It's also about a father and daughter, estranged for years, who are finally able to become friends.
ABSOLUTE POWER is a progressively implausible, though admittedly crowd-pleasing thriller, adapted from the David Baldacci best seller by writer William Goldman and director Clint Eastwood.
The events in ABSOLUTE POWER revolve around what happens while Luther is in that vault, staring through oneway glass at the two people who show up in the middle of the robbery.

Absolute Power, adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from the novel by David Baldacci, is an intriguing story told in an effective manner.
This is one movie that looks better while you're watching it than when you reflect upon it afterwards.
The final cut of Absolute Power isn't shocking or surprising, but seeing it is worth the commitment of a couple of hours on a cold February night.

Gene Hackman plays President Alan Richmond, a slimy politician who uses his power for sexual favors and official coverups, as Clinton is alleged to have done.
The movie also appears to have been made on a shoestring budget, which also helps this movie.

 Salon | "Air Force One"
The Nixon era in movies was represented by the law-and-order ethos of "Dirty Harry" as surely as it was by the Watergate-era cynicism of "Chinatown." The Reagan era brought back melodramas, like "Terms of Endearment," "Ordinary People" and "An Officer and a Gentleman," that would have been laughed off the screen a few years before.
The movie's Clinton stand-in, President James Marshall (Harrison Ford, appropriately displaying the facial mobility of Mount Rushmore), is a leader who defies his timid advisors in his efforts to set policies against injustice and tyranny and is willing to take on Congress to enforce those policies.
She and the rest of the cast, which includes Dean Stockwell as the secretary of Defense, Paul Guilfoyle as the chief of staff and William H. Macy as an Army general, seem to be competing for the title of Bureaucrat with the Tiredest Blood.

'Absolute Power' is another testament to Clint Eastwood's ability as a talented filmmaker.
'Absolute Power' is an extremely powerful motion picture filled with intrigue (both political and social) that manages to construct its plot line in a manner suitable for building to a daring climax but also in a way for serious discussion after you leave the theatre.
What makes 'Absolute Power' so enjoyable to a large extent is seeing Eastwood gradually move into parts that fit his age.

Absolute Power (series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Absolute Power is a British comedy series, set in the offices of Prentiss McCabe, a fictional public relations company (or 'government-media relations consultancy') in London, run by Charles Prentiss (Stephen Fry), and Martin McCabe (John Bird).
The series was devised and written by Mark Tavener, and logically follows the series In the Red, In the Balance, In the Chair, and In the End which he wrote with Peter Baynham.
Transferring a radio series to television can be risky [...] Absolute Power, however, succeeds where previous comedies have failed, and looks set to do for PR what Drop The Dead Donkey did for the newsroom.

You know political bashing in the movies has gone a step too far when the president is portrayed as a psychotic would-be rapist-killer.
The best scene in the movie is a moment when Harris and East-wood face off in a bar, a witty sequence that shows they have terrific chemistry.
"Absolute Power" is rated R for violence, attempted rape, sex, profanity, vulgarity and some nude drawings.

Absolute Power movie review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The movie really starts off slowly: Luther Whitney (Eastwood) is in the process of burglarising the home of millionaire Walter Sullivan (E.G. Marshal) when he witnesses the Secret Service kill Christy Sullivan (Melora Hardin), after she attempts to defend herself against the sexual advances of the President of the USA, Alan Richmond (Hackman).
The moment he sees this hypocracy Witney decides not to run and instead fights to bring the cover-up to light, with the aid of detective Seth Frank (Harris) and Whitney's own daughter Kate (Laura Linney), who is less than thrilled to have a criminal for a father.
Some people as usual have criticised that this movie casts the President's office in a bad light (the sheer irony of this claim leaves me speechless, so I'm not going to comment on that aspect).

 'Absolute Power (R)'
After an intriguing beginning, Clint Eastwood’s latest movie -- which he co-produced, directed and stars in -- devolves into such utter ludicrousness, the best response (other than avoiding the thing in the first place) is to laugh.
In the film, which William Goldman adapted from the David Baldacci bestseller, Luther Whitney (Eastwood) is a master thief whose checkered past includes imprisonment for his thievery and military decorations for action in Korea.
But in the interests of this movie’s fig-leaf twist, it’s better not to disclose too much.

Palo Alto Online: Movie Screener - Absolute Power
In the first pages of "Absolute Power," a lightweight-but-riveting page-turner by David Baldacci, a cat burglar in the process of burglarizing a mansion unwittingly becomes the sole witness to a particularly sordid homicide in which the president of the United States is implicated.
The remainder of the book revolves around the efforts of the police to solve the murder while, unbeknownst to the officers, the Secret Service is trying to identify, locate, frame and assassinate the burglar before the police investigation leads to the White House.
As the president's chief of staff and point person on the cover-up, Judy Davis hisses and purrs through the corridors of power giving a performance so arch one wishes she were in more scenes.

Determined to clear his name, Whitney cleverly eludes a tenacious detective (Ed Harris) while investigating a corruption of power reaching to the highest level of government.

Absolute Power   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
It's a gem of sly disclosure and exquisite exposition, as is the sequence that follows, which is in its own way as outrageous and provocative as the closet scene in David Lynch's Blue Velvet.
Surprised mid robbery by the return of Sullivan's wife, Christy (Melora Hardin, who proves to have a powerful right hook), with Sullivan's protégé Alan Richmond (Gene Hackman) in tow, Whitney hides out in a secret closet vault in the bedroom -- a vault that, it turns out, is equipped with a one-way mirror.
Richmond is the president of the United States, and Absolute Power is a kind of inversion of In the Line of Fire.

 ABSOLUTE POWER
This is a moderately successful suspense film that just doesn't have enough thrills to make it a great movie, let alone a classic of the genre.
The movie has some awkwardly written dialogue such as Luther talking to his daughter: "I swear on Maddie's grave.
Luther and Kate have a strained relationship and she says, "You were never around for me. I have no plans to be around for you." She's upset about him not caring about her, but she later finds that he really did.

The premise of the new Clint Eastwood picture, ``Absolute Power,'' would probably have been enough to make a decent movie.
``Absolute Power'' is a first-rate thriller about arrogance at the top, a showdown between two kinds of Americans: the evil, omnipotent bureaucrat, with all the world at his disposal, and the enterprising, mind-his-own-business loner, the old-fashioned American.
``Absolute Power'' is a film with many strong roles and famous faces in those roles.
