Also previous hearing aid experience is of importance when prescribing the initial setting of the hearing aid, as the amount of amplification giving optimally intelligible reproduction of speech is often more than can be tolerated by a user unaccustomed to the loudness of sounds provided by hearing aids.

The absolute threshold of hearing and the equal-loudness contours are among the most fundamental aspects of the human hearing.
Both the threshold and the equal-loudness contours are frequency dependent, and for the equal-loudness contours, the dependence varies with level, thus reflecting non-linearities of the human hearing.
Thresholds were measured for the whole auditory range and a fine agreement was seen with previous investigations.

The absolute threshold of hearing at any particular frequency will vary be-tween individuals, but the average value is well documented and can be used as a fixed lower limit in the calculation of the noise masking threshold described above.
Essentially the mask threshold is only calculated at certain perceptually critical frequencies of the spectrum and the threshold value applied to a larger group of frequency coefficients clustered around this value.

If a signal has any frequency components with power levels that fall below the absolute threshold of hearing, then these components can be discarded, as the average listener will be unable to hear those frequencies of the signal anyway.
Determining whether a frequency component is a tone requires knowing whether it has been held constant for a period of time, as well as whether it is a sharp peak in the frequency spectrum, which indicates that it is above the ambient noise of the signal.
