Their main tenant was that Abu Muslim (governor of Khurasan 748-755, murdered by Caliph al-Mansur) was not dead but had gone into hiding and would return either at the head of the Mahdi's army or as the Mahdi himself, ushering in a messianic era.
After Abu Muslim was murdered, al-Muqanna claimed to be an incarnation of God, and insisted that it had been passed unto him from Abu Muslim to whom it was passed on to from 'Ali to whom it was passed on to from Muhammad.
Al-Muqanna was instrumental to the formation of the Khurramiyyah sect that claimed Abu Muslim to be the Mahdi or to return with the Mahdi, and denied his death.

 Al-Muayyad fid-din ash-Shirazi
Al-Muayyad fid-din Abu Nasr Hibatullah bin Abi Imran Musa bin Daud ash-Shirazi was an outstanding dai, orator, prolific writer, poet and politician.
In 429/1037, when al-Muayyad was 39 years old, he received quick promotions in his service as a chief dai of Shiraz and then the hujjat for the whole Iran.
Al-Mustansir deputed him in 447/1055 on a mission to the Syrian amirs, and notably to Abu Harith al-Basasari with an army of 3000 Arab troops.

Subsequently, he settled in Cairo, where he played an active part in the affairs of the Fatimid dawla as well as the Ismaili da‘wa which he headed for 20 years from 450/1058 until shortly before his death in 470/1078.

He further goes to describe how they spared no efforts to tarnish his good name before King Abu Kalijar al- Buwayhi.
In spite of the unfavorable circumstances in which al- Muayyad was placed, he won the favors of the King who permitted him to visit his palace whenever he wished.
King Abu Kalijar wrote to al-Mu'ayyad advising him to leave Shiraz for his own safety and go wherever he wished as he was not in a position to provide protection to al Muayyad any more.
