Bataan peninsula is located southwards from the western shores of central Luzon, forming the enclosed and well-sheltered Manila Bay to the east that is nearly cut off from the open China Sea in the west.
Bataan fell to Japan on April 9 and was retaken by an American force on February 17, 1945.
Bataan, then known as Vatan, was part of the vast Capampangan Empire that included what now are the provinces of Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, and some portions of Bulacan, Zambales and Pangasinan, These coastal villages were inhabited by natives who were predominantly fishermen, farmers and craftsmen.

Shortly after the Japanese Army invaded the country in December 1941, the combined forces of Filipino and American forces were overrun and General Douglas MacArthur, was forced to retreat leaving behind tens of thousands of soldiers to make a last stand in Bataan.
On April 3 the Japanese forces began an all-out assault on the American and Filipino troops left on the peninsula.
Bataan fell several days later on April 9 and the Bataan Death March began (see Fall of Bataan).

It was a bit difficult to leave the serenity and beauty of Abucay, not to mention all the special attention given by the locals there.

The DBP forest site in Abucay, Bataan has been identified in response to the need to develop the mangrove resources in the area in order to enhance and support livelihood activities in these coastal communities.
He added that the project is expected to enable the beneficiary communities to increase their yield as each reforested hectare is projected to result to a corresponding increase of one ton in fish catch.
