Abusir is about half way between Giza and Sakkara.

 The Pyramid of Sahure - Crystalinks
All of the pyramid complexes at Abusir are ruined, as much by stone thieves as from the ravages of time.
But in 1994 when it was decided to open the Abusir pyramid field to tourists, new discoveries were made.
Several of the monuments at Abusir, and particularly the pyramid complex of Sahure, were the subjects of restoration efforts.  During this process, several huge blocks in the upper part of Sahure's causeway were discovered to be decorated with iconographically and artistically unique reliefs.

The "Abusir papyri," were found to contain records of cult administration, inventories, accounts and records of building work, priestly duties, and daily offerings to the two solar temples located north of Abusir at Abu Ghurab.
Abusir's fifth dynasty cemetery has been excavated since the 1970s, and is still a major archeological site today.

 Excavation Report: Architectural Remains at Abusir-south
At the site of Abusir, about 10 km south of the Giza plateau, there is another large royal cemetery of the Old Kingdom.
The cemetery is composed of four kings' pyramids belonging to the 5th Dynasty and surrounding tombs built by royal family and officials, which is a typical layout of royal cemeteries in the Old Kingdom.
Our research on the sites around the pyramids in the Abusir area commenced in September 1990.
