Abyssinian (cat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is believed all Abyssinians in Europe, the Americas, and Australia are descended from Zula, but there has been at least one and possibly as many as three Abyssinians introduced from Libya (or less likely Egypt) into the existing Abyssinian gene pool in the USA.
Abyssinians are very active, friendly, curious and playful, but are usually not "lap cats"; they are too preoccupied exploring and playing; they are "busy" cats, and can get bored and depressed without daily activity and attention.
Many Abyssinians enjoy heights, and will explore their surroundings in three dimensions, from the floor to their owner's shoulders to the top of the highest furniture.

Cat Fanciers' Association: Breed Profile: Abyssinian
Although the Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds, there continues to be speculation and controversy concerning its history.
Unfortunately, there are no written records tracing the early Abyssinians to those imported cats, and many British breeders are of the opinion that the breed was actually created through the crossing of the various existing silver and brown tabbies with native British "Bunny" ticked cats.
The first Abyssinians to be imported to North America from England arrived in the early 1900s, but it was not until the late 1930s that several top quality Abys were exported from Britain to form the foundation of today's American breeding programs.

Known as the "Child of the Gods" the Abyssinian is considered by many to be the descendant of the sacred cats worshipped in the temples of Egypt.
The name "Abyssinian" does not refer to any known fact confirming the origin of this breed as being from Abyssinia (now Ethiopia), but because the first cat so-called "Abyssinian" was exhibited in England and was reported to have been imported from that region.
