The company is in negotiations with several large adult-entertainment companies, as well as companies that provide entertainment to hotels and others that deliver music and video over the Internet.

Acacia Research (Newport Beach, Calif.), which develops, acquire, and licenses patented technologies, originally filed a patent infringement suit surrounding the coherency technology against core logic chipset maker Via Technologies in the District Court for the Northern District of California last December.
Acacia made a bit of noise April 19 when it filed a patent suit against Intel and Texas Instruments in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, centering around pipeline processor architecture for microprocessors.
It's not clear why Acacia is suddenly in a litigious mode, but there could be some connection from the fact that one of Acacia's two operating groups, CombiMatrix, formed a partnership with Intel last September on the use of its core IP.

Washington College in Chestertown, Md., was told that by Acacia that a minimum annual license fee of $5,000 was likely to cover the company claims it's owed.  But Acacia said the deal is only on the table until Sept. 15.  Afterward, the price might go up and Acacia might sue for past infringement.
Acacia's digital media patents, granted to the founders of Greenwich Information Technologies in the 1990s, weren't enforced until Acacia bought them in 2001.  Acacia has since secured dozens of licensing deals with companies ranging from adult entertainment sites to The Walt Disney Co.  It has also sued large cable and satellite providers.
In a preliminary ruling in Acacia's dispute with adult entertainment sites last month, a federal judge ruled that several terms in Acacia's patents were indefinite, a verdict that could weaken potential Acacia cases against other streaming video users.
