  "Towards a European research area"
The Academia Europaea has a special role in linking research and higher education and we shall be pleased to act as advisers and consultants in that capacity.
The Academia Europaea has been active in pressing a recognition by national bodies and the Commission of the need for high bandwidth computer-based networking in Europe and recently issued a joint statement with the ESF on this matter.
The Academia Europaea agrees that mobility amongst researchers is of vital importance in developing the European research area, and the various programmes established by the Commission to support training and mobility are held in high regard, as are the frequently overworked Commission staff who administer the programmes.

The first Eurobasin School training course was arranged at the University of Bergen in November 1997, and the School was closed with its last training course at the University of Paris VI in December 1999.
Academia Europaea nominated a Scientific Council, which had the responsibility for the scientific quality and implementation of the School.
The blend of lecturers from academia and industry, which characterised several of the events, provided a multitude of scientific approaches and aspects, both theoretical and practical, to each data set.
