Academia Gustavo-Carolina shortly after that moved from Tartu to Pärnu as a result of the coalition against Sweden and the Great Famine of 1695-1697.
Academia Gustavo-Carolina which had opened in Pärnu on 28 August 1699 was closed because of the surrender to the Russian forces on 12 August 1710 during the Northern War.
With the opening of the printing press of Academia Gustaviana in 1631 (it was opened at the secondary school of Tartu, the predecessor of the university) which opened up the era of book printing in Estonia.

After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the Scanian lands came under the possession of the Swedish Crown, which quickly founded the Lund University in 1666 as the means of Swedification.
It was the fifth university under the Swedish king, after Uppsala University 1477, the Academia Gustaviana 1632, now in Estonia; the Academy of Åbo 1640, now in Finland; and the University of Greifswald, 1648, now in Germany.
The university was named Academia Carolina after Charles X Gustav of Sweden.

The opening ceremony of Academia Dorpatensis (Academia Gustaviana) took place on 15 October 1632.
The memoirs were written in 1709 and describe in detail the entertainment and pranks of students in Pärnu in 1707-1708, also their conflicts with the academic staff, particularly with the then Rector I. Bröms.
Academia Gustavo-Carolina which had opened in Pärnu on 28 August 1699 was closed because the town surrendered to the Russian forces on 12 August 1710 during the Northern War.

The university was founded in 1640 by Count Per Brahe in Turku (Åbo), as the Royal Academy of Turku (Åbo Kungliga Akademi).
It was the third university founded in the Swedish Empire, following Uppsala University and the Academia Gustaviana in Dorpat, the predecessor of the University of Tartu in Estonia.
Following the great city fire of Turku in 1827 and the move of the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland, under Russian rule since 1809, to Helsinki, the university was relocated there and re-named the Imperial Alexander University of Finland after Czar Alexander I of Russia.

Due to war, the Academia Gustaviana, founded in Tartu, could not operate on a continuous basis and some of its work had to take place in other towns (Reval/Tallinn and Pärnu), but the school's structure and bylaws were the same as other European universities.

In 1632 the Tartu Grammar School was reorganised and was given the name Academia Gustaviana.
As a rule, there were no Estonian students studying there.
Academia Gustaviana operated until 1656 when the area was occupied by Russian troops; it again operated as Academia Gustaviana-Carolina from 1690 to 1710 until it was forced to close by the Great Northern War.
