Bartolomeu de Gusmão - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is certain that Gusmão was working on this principle at the public exhibition he gave before the Court on August 8, 1709, in the hall of the Casa da India in Lisbon, when he propelled a ball to the roof by combustion.
He was also one of the fifty chosen members of the Academia Real da Historia, founded in 1720; and in 1722 he was made chaplain to the Court.
The only fact really established by contemporary documents is that information was laid against him before the Inquisition, but on quite another charge.

 The Portuguese Medieval Parliament
This may have happened for the clergy sometimes (on few occasions, as it happens, because the real plenaries of the clergy were held outside the Cortes, quite possibly before, but not during, the parliamentary sessions) and it happened even less frequently (if in fact there was ever such a meeting) for the nobility.
It was then that the real work would begin, with the people’s delegates dividing themselves amongst committees and sessions of different types: plenary sessions, closed sessions, inter or intra-estate committee meetings, meetings with the king or his delegates.
But it was the taking of decisions upon taxes and legal tender that gave the Cortes their real strength; and it was this that made them essential for the king, and which therefore gave the people’s delegates great bargaining power.

Quijote, or present Berganza's remarks in the “Coloquio de los perros” which contrast the life of “real” shepherds with that of characters in pastoral romance and conclude with the already-mentioned statement that “todos aquellos libros son cosas soñadas y bien escritas, para entretenimiento de los ociosos, y no verdad alguna” (“Coloquio,” Anaya ed., 106).
Berganza's contrast between the externals of literary and “real” pastoral life betrays a fundamental lack of understanding of the nature of literary convention and underlines the limitations of the dog-narrator.
While his rather wide life's experience may have made him a passable cynical philosopher, he is a naïve reader, or rather in his case, a listener, and not a literary critic at all.

So what is really interesting about "paths" is now it shapes the search for innovation--and it is innovation, as Adam Smith pointed out (not merely efficient, and thus static, market exchange), that ought to be of real interest, and is what ultimately justifies open (competitive) markets, IMHO.
I gather from the recent discussion that there is, in fact, a general consensus that path dependence is a real phenomenon, at least as the term is defined by the principal promoters of the concept, David and Arthur.
Random walks are central to "real options" theory and this theory offers a useful corrective to both simplistic neo-classical models and simplistic path dependence models (see Dixit and Pindyck, "Investment Under Uncertainty" for an introduction).

For example, his work on pottery is a part of his interest in the economy, which blends with that on community development and public health, and his interest in community development (and his perception that peasants often lack such an interest) sparked investigations of role behavior, worldview, and culture change.
