Free software license - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Put another way, a free software license is a license which grants permissions to the recipient to remove any ownership issues which would otherwise prevent the software from being free software.
The list distinguishes between free software licenses that are compatible or incompatible with the FSF license of choice, the GNU General Public License, which is a copyleft license.
, as the BSD license is not copyleft and therfore "GPL-incompatible".

The primary incompatibility is that this Python license is governed by the laws of the "State of Virginia", in the USA, and the GPL does not permit this.
This is a Free Documentation license that is incompatible with the GNU FDL.
Likewise, if you use this license without either of the options to make your manual free, someone else might decide to imitate you, then change his or her mind about the options thinking that that is just a detail; the result would be that his or her manual is non-free.

Free software licenses - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Free software is software which grants recipients the freedom to run it, to study it, to modify it, and to redistribute it.
The main difference is the belief that the copyleft licenses, particularly the GNU General Public License (GPL), are too complicated and have restrictions which are unacceptable; some also object to the "viral" effect of the copyleft licenses.
All of the open source BSDs tend to avoid including software licensed under the GPL in the core operating system (usually known as the base system) except as a last resort, when alternatives are non-existent or vastly less capable, such as with the GNU Compiler Collection.

Academic free software   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Most academic software is released under a "free for academic use" license, which makes it impossible to use such software in a free software project.
The majority of academic researchers release the software they create as part of their research, but they generally do so under a license that restricts use of the software to academic purposes.
The benefits to the free software community of having more free software are clear, but the arguments for making academic software free are less well defined, and different from those applicable to the commercial world.

For example, if a third party patent license is required to allow Recipient to distribute the Program, it is Recipient's responsibility to acquire that license before distributing the Program.
While this license is intended to facilitate the commercial use of the Program, the Contributor who includes the Program in a commercial product offering should do so in a manner which does not create potential liability for other Contributors.
