AAUP Press Release: Academic Boycott   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Excluded from the ban are "conscientious Israeli academics and intellectuals opposed to their state's colonial and racist policies," an exclusion which, because it requires compliance with a political or ideological test in order for an academic relationship to continue, deepens the injury to academic freedom rather than mitigates it.
Since its founding in 1915, the AAUP has been committed to preserving and advancing the free exchange of ideas among academics irrespective of governmental policies and however unpalatable those policies may be viewed.
We reject proposals that curtail the freedom of teachers and researchers to engage in work with academic colleagues, and we reaffirm the paramount importance of the freest possible international movement of scholars and ideas.

California [University Press] vs. Academic Freedom - article by Daniel Pipes
Critiques of the global academic march to the left tend to focus on classroom antics, silly statements to the press, articles with incomprehensible titles, and efforts to punish students who have the temerity to disagree with their radical professors.
This finding of wisdom in only one part of the political spectrum and publishing only its views is deeply consequential: it betrays the concept of academic freedom, a concept that assumes no one outlook has a monopoly on truth, but that truth emerges from debate.
To reinstate academic freedom requires a reassertion of principles, something most effectively done through the widespread adoption of the "Academic Bill of Rights," David Horowitz's initiative that has already reached 130 American campuses and eight state legislatures.

The Importance of...: The Right to Hire an Attorney at an Academic Press
One university press's book recalled at the insistence of an employee at another academic press presents an exquisite irony.
But the tale of A Rebecca Clarke Reader also illustrates a much larger problem: University presses, affected by shifting interpretations of copyright law, lack the resources to test the provisions of that law.
The threat of a lawsuit is alone adequate to decide the "case" in favor of the copyright holder.
