		The first few years fencing as a sport were chaotic with rule disagreements among schools of fencing from countries notably the French and Italian schools.
		As a sport the emphasis of the sporting tradition is on training athletes to at competitions with often arbitrarily defined rules opposed to the older "classical" tradition of seeking to preserve training with the sword a means of self-defense and for the duel.
