Academic societies served both as a forum to present and publish academic work, the role now served by academic publishing, and as a means to sponsor research and support academics, a role they still serve.

Program Details for A Dialogue on Rigor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Let’s face it; rigor is a concept that applies to all educators in much the same way as integrity applies to political leaders: we say we value it, we aspire to achieve it and (whether or not we really ever do achieve it) the public demands that we strive for it.
Rather, rigor is a highly personalized element of the teaching/learning partnership in which the teacher lights a fire of academic ambition and personal responsibility in the learner and shares with the learner a mutual accountability for stoking that fire with high expectations, achievement and continuous growth.
Rigor is not raised by boosting the average IQ of a classroom of students; it is raised by boosting mutual (teacher and learner) accountability for elevating the expectation, performance and capacity of each student.
