ACADEMIES - Online Information article about ACADEMIES
In 1816 the Academie des sciences was reconstituted as a branch of the Institute.
Montpellier, for example, had a royal academy of sciences, founded in 1706 by Louis XIV., on nearly the same footing as that of Paris, of which, indeed, it was in some measure the counterpart.
To the Berlin Academy we owe the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum, the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, and the Monumenta Germaniae Historica.

The new organization was called at first Institut national des Sciences et des Arts; the name Académie was not used in the names of the sections because it was considered reactionary.
The Institut de France therefore finally came to be comprised of five academies—the French Academy, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (history and archaeology), the Académie des Sciences, the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and the Académie des Sciences morales et politiques.
The academies are self-perpetuating, but the state has the right of veto over their elections.

The Academy had already become dormant by 1683, and was revived at the insistence of Colbert.
It was revived in 1806 as the Société des Sciences, des Arts et des Belles Lettres de Soissons; it apparently published two volumes of Mémoires in 1807 and 1808 (of which evidently no trace remains).
It was modelled on Italian scientific academies, and among other things, gave an incentive for the building of the first public library.
