		The Academy of Fine Arts, Munich (German: Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, also known as Munich Academy) was founded 1808 by Maximilian I of Bavaria in Munich as the "Royal Academy of Fine Arts".
		In 1946, the Academy was merged with the schools for arts-and-crafts and applied arts, respectively.

	American Impressionism: William Merritt Chase - NGA
		At the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he received his most decisive training, Chase was one of the many Americans, including Frank Duveneck and later John Twachtman, studying there.
		As a leader of the insurgent younger painters who challenged the authority of the National Academy of Design, he was a founding member of the Society of American Artists and, in 1880, was elected its president.

	Ney, Elisabet
		In 1855 she went to Berlin to study with Christian Daniel Rauch, through whom she was introduced to the literati and cultural leaders of that city.
		In Rome she also did a bust of Bismarck on commission from Wilhelm I of Prussia, and she executed a colossal "Prometheus Bound." In late 1867 she returned to Munich as court sculptor to Ludwig II of Bavaria, by whom she and Montgomery were installed in a villa.
		Ney again turned to her art in 1890, with commissions for statues of Stephen F. Austin and Samuel Houston to be exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago three years later.

		In 1828 he went to the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts to begin the study of art under Professor Wach, and was there so impressed by pictures of the Düsseldorf School that he placed himself under Schadow, the director of the Dusseldorf Academy.
		Deger, says Dr. Banz, "lived in religion, had a profound conviction of the nobility of his art, and painted what he felt, believed and hoped." He was only twenty-one when his "Pietà" brought him fame, and thenceforth he devoted himself to religious painting.
		Deger was made professor in the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, a member of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, and, in 1869, professor in the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.

		In 1875 Twachtman began to study under Ludwig von Loefftz at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where he learned the broad, vigorous brushwork and somber tones typical of that school.
