The activity of the Academy of Sciences is based on the Law regarding the state policy in the research and development sphere (1999), the Law on the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (2000), the Statute of the Academy and other normative documents.
The main task of the Academy is to advance fundamental researches in pure sciences, life sciences and humanities, to conduct long-term scientific investigations closely connected with national and international science and culture, the priority being given to ecological problems and nature conservation as well as development of national economy of Moldova.
The Academy of Sciences of Moldova collaborates with a number of important scientific organizations as INTAS, UNESCO, IAEA, NATO Scientific Committee, ALLEA and is a member of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) and of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).

Real needs of the scientific and educational community of Moldova in obtaining a modern information and communication service are the main factor, promoting the development of information and networking technologies, unification of the research and educational establishments attempts to create an improved networking infrastructure and filling it with a corresponding content.
The initiative of the Moldavian department of Soros Foundation, supported by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and three leading Universities in 1996, dial with the elaboration and realization of the "Moldnet" network creation project, was the first and very important uniting step.

The Moldova State University is the first of the higher education institutions accredited by the Government of Moldova.

 “Development of national WWW STACCIS Information Demonstration Centre (IDC) in Moldova”
The national WWW IDC in Moldova is to draw a wide circle of users in the scientific-educational sphere: research workers, professors, post-graduates and students — in the mastering and using of the applied networking technologies.
The basic principles of IDC Moldova development, its structure and databases content description were presented in the reports "The Concept of creation of the STACCIS project Information-Demonstration Center in Moldova" and "The structure of IDC Moldova information database" at the conference "INTERNET 98", which took place in Kishinev on November 18-20, 1998.
