Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
The Academy was founded in 1946 in Los Angeles by Syd Cassyd, a trade journal writer who recognized the need for a television organization similar to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
One of the earliest activities of the new Academy was to establish a creative identity (and a degree of publicity and prestige) for the developing television industry by presenting awards--the Emmys--in recognition for outstanding work in the medium.
In 1991 the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences moved into new headquarters containing office and library space as well as a state of the art theater in which to screen television materials and hold large meetings.

In April, academy officials announced that acceptance speeches in selected categories would be replaced by pre-taped, timed remarks from winners.
The academy had considered even more sweeping changes, including bumping awards in some writing and directing categories from the live Sept. 18 show to the smaller-scale creative arts ceremony that precedes it by a week.
The academy still walked a delicate line with its creation of a two-tier system of acceptance speeches, live and taped, but did not cite that as a reason for abandoning the change.
