The monophyly of Acalyptratae is not well-founded and the relationships between acalyptrate superfamilies remain obscure.
These figures suggest that the family concept in Acalyptratae is narrower than the family concept used elsewhere in Diptera.
Our knowledge of relationships among the superfamilies of Acalyptratae remains poor and is another area of high priority.

 Interactive Fly, Drosophila
Experiments with two inducible transgenes demonstrate that the corresponding Ceratitis Sxl product has no significant sex-transforming effects when expressed in Drosophila.
The Medfly belongs to the Acalyptratae group, as does Drosophila, and hence it is closely related in phylogenesis to Drosophila.
These findings suggest that Sxl acquired its master regulatory role in sex determination during evolution of the Acalyptratae group, most probably after phylogenetic divergence of the genus Drosophila from other genera of this group.

Sciomyzid larvae (Diptera: Acalyptratae) display a wide range of feeding behaviors, typically preying on a wide variety of gastropods.
The genus Tetanocera is particularly interesting because its species occupy five larval feeding groups with each species' larvae living in one of two habitat types (aquatic or terrestrial).
