African Acarology Symposium Dr Eddie Ueckermann, a world specialist on predatory mites, received a prestigious award from the African Acarologists in cooperation with the International Journal of Acarology for his outstanding service to Acarology.
The symposium was organized by the African Acarology Association (AAA), an initiative of ARC-Plant Protection Research Institute (Arachnology Section), which was established during the first symposium, held in South Africa in November 1998.
Attendance of the symposium in Egypt and close ties with the African Acarology Association is directly in line with the ARC's aim to strengthen its collaboration with regional (SADAC) African countries and international partners working within the NEPAD framework.

Gary Mullen then gave a report on the Acarology Symposia to be presented at the 2000 International Congress of Entomology to be held at Iguassu Falls, Brazil, from August 20-26.
Only two symposia were organized for the Acarology Session: (1) "Dispersal in the Acari" organized by Marilyn Houck and Maurice Sabelis, and (2) "Molecular, Physiological and Biochemical Processes in Acarines" organized by John Sauer and Lewis Coons.
Convenors for Acarology Session: The convenor and co-convenor of the Acarology Session are Gary Mullen (Auburn University, USA) and Gilberto de Moraes (Universidade de Sao Paulo, Escola Superior de Agricultura: Luis de Queiroz, Piracicaba, Brazil).

For 56 years the Acarology Summer Program has been one of the premier teaching programs in the identification of Acari.
An endowment fund was established at OSU by the founder of the Acarology Summer Program, the late George Wharton.
The fellowship will assist students at the graduate level to attend the Acarology Summer Program at OSU or an equivalent institution where training may be obtained in the systematics of acarines.

The Acarological Society of America will award one $150 Travel Award to an outstanding graduate student presenting his/her research at the Acarology Submitted Papers Session of the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America.
The fellowship will help finance her participation in the soil acarology workshop at the 2004 Acarology Summer Program at Ohio State University.

 The IOBC-NRS Distinguished Scientist Award
Marjorie advanced through the ranks to Professor in 1982, and in 1992 moved to the Department of Entomology and Nematology at University of Florida as Eminent Scholar and Davies, Fischer and Eckes Professor of Biological Control.
Recently, Marjorie was a member of a National Academy of Sciences committee on Biological Threats to Agricultural Plants and Animals (March 2001- 2002), which reviewed the status of US agriculture's ability to deter, detect and respond to bioterrorism.
He has published over 140 papers, taught courses on general and agricultural acarology, and has served on the editorial board of International Journal of Acarology, Experimental and Applied Acarology, and Acarologia.
