  Rhythm
Whereas as an isolated element in the utterance a word may be accentuated in a specific way, when that word is part of a string, the same speaker may give that word a different accentuation pattern.
Accentuation in short strings depends on the natural rhythm of the language, and this leads to the study of intonation (changes of pitch range and direction).
Transitive phrasal verbs in a sentence which includes a direct object (when we speak) will adopt different accentuation patterns according to whether the particle of the phrasal verb is transposed or not, and if it is, according to whether the direct object is a full noun or a pronoun.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2004.04.10
Throughout the chapters on the various aspects of accentuation are scattered exercises to help test what is being learnt: such exercises are an aid both to memorising the rules and individual accents and to reinforcing the new rules that are being introduced.
Then the rules for the accentuation of nouns and adjectives are discussed in some detail: first the general rules and patterns, then the rules for accenting base forms of simplex nouns and adjectives and finally some notes on the accentuation of compounds, proper names, pronouns, and indeclinables.
It is these rules for the accentuation of base forms that makes this book more useful than the brief notes on accent rules offered by most beginning Greek textbooks, which offer little help with the learning of base forms of persistently accented words.

 Accentuation of Enclitics
This is partly because rules of accentuation generally are seen as arcane and unimportant.
The strange attitude that accentuation isn't important enough to spend much time on, but, contradictorily, that students will freak out if you show them anything apparently anomalous, has led to a rather odd situation in most textbooks.
In classes without much emphasis on composition (writing in Greek), accentuation doesn't tend to be a subject that students have to deal with on a daily basis.

Dictionaries and phonologists: English accentuation and stress
Whereas the Chomsky-Halle notation concentrates on degrees of prominence among syllables, the dictionary representation corresponds to a surface representation of underlying metrical foot structure.
Adopting this perspective we show that English words typically are composed of binary and ternary feet that are left-headed, whereas unary feet and unfooted syllables are restricted to the right and left edges of words, respectively.
In this way we are able to extend the analysis to phrases, compounds, and sentences and to show that similar principles govern the stress levels of these higher-level constituent types.

Uniformity and Change: a Case in Lithuanian Accentuation - Klimas
It is generally known that Lithuanian has the most mobile, or changeable accentuation system of all the living Indo-European languages.
Namely, in normal speech, especially in rapid speech, or the so-called allegro cadence, all one-syllable Lithuanian prepositions are unstressed, but because they are attached, as it were, to the word they govern.
And there is an accentuation law in Lithuanian: if an unstressed syllable precedes the stressed one, its diphthong will always receive the circumflex (~) intonation.

 Accent
The normal accentuation pattern is the first one, but if you use the second, it is also correct.
When words are elements forming a compound word, their accentuation pattern as words in isolation may be varied.
So, the accentuation patterns of compound words must be analysed as a distinct category - distinct from word and from sentence (or phrase) accentuation.

Accentuation and Duration in the Music of the
In addition, there is a curious lack of relation between melodic duration and textual accentuation.
While this may sound awkward to us, the medieval listener may not have perceived it; thus, since such disproportionately distributed ligatures and melismas occur frequently in Gregorian chant and even in some French chansons de toile, which, because of their narrative character, are close relatives of the Cantigas.
In songs, on the other hand, accentuation and duration in the melody (as well as the accompaniment) are at least as important as the proper prosody of the words.

However, do bear in mind that such a separation is artificial, and serves only an expository purpose.
Your understanding of the phrasing of utterances is intimately tied up with your understanding of the accentuation and the melodic aspects: in any given utterance the three aspects are always considered together.
The accentuation concerns the locations of so-called sentence accents or pitch accents.

A finite form is one that can be described as having person and number--in other words, all of the forms of the indicative, imperative, subjunctive and optative moods will have recessive accent.

Cognitive Designs: Symbol Accentuation Reading Program
The Symbol Accentuation Program begins phonetic reading and writing instruction by teaching children to "fix" a few letter-sound relationships and then by helping them to combine these letters into meaningful words.
For example, while films used in Lessons 16-26 accentuated all letters in order to provide sequential cues for the appropriate sounds, the last four films from Lesson 27-30 show the first two letters (a consonant and a vowel) as a unit: e.g., ca, mo, ri, etc. Leaving only the final consonant in its "accentuated" form.
The purpose here, of course, is to decrease the dependence on letter accentuation and, at the same time, to train students to cope with the first letters of a word as a unit.
