Access points are the most expensive and primary piece of a wireless network.
The access point is connected to a wired network, everyone on the wireless network speaks to this access point, which connects the access point to the rest of the world.
Access point positioning has the goal to overlap coverage cells, these wireless lan access points ensure network contact is never lost.

Explanations and Descriptions - Access Points
An Access Point is a Wi-Fi wireless networking radio transceiver that allows an appropriately equipped computer or other device to connect to a data network.
An 802.11 Wi-Fi access point provides a connection between the electrical data path formed by an Ethernet cable and the RF signal data path formed by the Wi-Fi radios.
In essence, an access point is a translational bridge, converting the TCP/IP data packets from their 802.11 frame encapsulation format in the air to the 802.3 Ethernet frame format on the wired Ethernet network.

Wireless access point - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer networking, a wireless access point (WAP or AP) is a device that connects wireless communication devices together to form a wireless network.
The concept can become organic in large cities, where a combination of coffeehouses, libraries, other public spaces offering wireless access, as well as privately owned open access points, allow clients to roam over a large area (like hopping from lily pad to lily pad), staying more or less continuously connected.
Many wired networks base the security on physical access control, trusting all the users on the local network, but if wireless access points are connected to the network, anyone on the street or in the neighbour office could connect.

 Managing Access Points and Clusters
If you have a network that includes multiple access points, and more than one administrator is logged on to the Administration Web pages and making changes to the configuration, all access points in the cluster will stay in synch but there is no guarantee that all configuration changes specified by multiple users will be applied.
In standalone mode, an access point is not a member of the cluster and does not share the cluster configuration, but rather requires manual configuration that is not shared with other access points.
This is useful for viewing data on a specific access point to make sure a cluster member is picking up cluster configuration changes, to configure advanced settings on a particular access point, or to switch a standalone access point to cluster mode.

 Configuring Access Points
Through the use of terminal software, you can view access point configuration screens and change specific settings, such as radio channel, transmit power, etc. The problem is that this method of accessing the configuration screens is often character-based and not user friendly.
If the IP address in the laptop or PC is set within an acceptable range of the access point (the IP address would be 192.168.0.xxx, with the last three numbers something between 2 and 254), then the browser will render the configuration screens in a much improved format.
By default, 802.11b access points operate at 1, 2, 5.5, and 11Mbps data rates, depending on the quality of the link between the client device and the access point.

 Approved Wireless Access Points
Based on our testing, we have concluded that enterprise-grade access points will be the only type approved for use on our network.
Other access points did not support all the features we require for use on the MUSC campus network.
While these access points may be fine for use at home or in a small business, they do not have all the features required for secure operation in a large enterprise.

Connecting a Private Wireless Access Point to the Campus Network
In the case of a misbehaving Wireless Access Point, or a wireless client behind a private Wireless Access Point, we typically disable network service at the point where the Wireless Access Point is attached to the campus network.
As the wireless access point redistributes your campus network access to other devices, you may be held responsible for the activities of any devices that connect to the network via your wireless access point, even if they do so without your explicit permission.
A Wireless Access Point acting as a bridge (and registered that way in the Host Database) is not charged for being attached to the campus network; it is treated as infrastructure, which is free.

 Subject access points
After the electronic revolution should subject access points, however, be understood in a much broader way.
A basic thesis in Hjørland and Kyllesbech Nielsen (2001) is that a given subject access point, say a title word does not have a given or constant value for information retrieval.
From this point of view is traditional research in IR merely a study of statistical averages that do not take genre variations in texts into account.
