Robert A. Baron: Museum Accession Number Issues
Instead of putting each accession number into a single field, the database was constructed with four or five fields each holding one segment of the accession number, i.e.
Thus the four accession number fields could be indexed as a unity for uniqueness and could be joined as a group to other files based on accession numbers.
A separate "lot" number identified related objects that did not necessarily have sequential numbers -- as when engravings from a portfolio had disparate accession numbers because they were donated in yearly batches.

Robert A. Baron, MUSEUM ACCESSION LEDGERS
It establishes the termini of each accession number series for the year, the numbers assigned to each accession grouping and to object parts, and notes those numbers within each series that have not been and will not be assigned.
Accession registers should consist of sequentially numbered volumes with the period of activity plainly written on the spine or cover and repeated on a title-page.
Obviously card-catalogues cannot be used as the primary record of accession because they cannot document the end of a series of assigned numbers, because their order is subject to corruption and because their elements are subject to damage or loss.

NPS Archeology Program: Managing Archeological Collections
Accession records in the register can also include more detailed information on object or record group condition, loan or exhibit history, copyright transfers, licenses, and permissions, photographs, cataloging information, or location information on the relevant accession file.
The accession number given to an object or record group serves as the link in a repository's record management system to all other information on the item.
Thus, an object may be numbered 1999-10-56, meaning the collection was accessioned in 1999, it was the 10th collection accessioned that year, and it is object #56.

PsycINFO | History of the Accession Number Format
Accession numbers needed to be structured to allow for releasing data more frequently than the monthly cycle of print publishing, and for coverage of a wider variety of source materials in the electronic product than in the print PA.
Mapping existing accession numbers to the current format was complicated, and we could not always ensure that accession-number components converted from older records would have the same meaning as in new records.
Abstract numbers for these records were derived independently, and were used as the NNNNN segment of the accession number.

 Electric Genetics - stackPACK v2.2
The program assigns internal accession numbers to the clonelinks, clusters, contigs and consensus sequences produced in the clustering pipeline and these, as well as the original sequence accession numbers, may be used to query the viewer.
In this example, the clonelink accession number, ln5, is seen at the top of the tree, and the two constituent cluster accession numbers, cl8 and cl20 branch off from it.
In this example, the clonelink accession number, ln4, is seen at the top of the tree, and the two constituent cluster accession numbers, cl7 and cl19 branch off from it.

NLM Technical Bulletin, November-December 2004, Accession Number Shelving of Non-Print Materials
The format of the accession number for non-print monographs is the acquisition year (e.g., 2004, 2005) and the identifier "AV", followed by a four-digit accession number.
When a title is assigned an accession number because it is to be shelved in NLM's general stacks, suggested classification numbers appear in the MARC View of the LocatorPlus display.
Bibliographic records for non-print monographs in LocatorPlus may display new non-print accession numbers in addition to the alternative subject classification numbers in the MARC 21 field on citations created or maintained in the database, as well as in records distributed to licensees of Catfile and CatfilePlus, as of October 1, 2004.

Accessioning specimens in the Mammal Collection   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Some groups of specimens received from a single source at approximately one time are heterogeneous, but because accessions are an administrative designation, a particular accession may be defined to facilitate specimen processing, record retrieval, or reporting requirements.
An accession number is required before data from individual specimens can be put into the database through the entry screen.
The accession file may become part of the permanent record of the specimen, or its contents may be more appropriately file moved to the collector/preparator file.

The GenBank accession number is a combination of letters and numbers that are usually in the format of one letter followed by five digits (e.g., M12345) or two letters followed by six digits (e.g., AC123456).
The accession number for a particular record will not change even if the author submits a request to change some of the information in the record.
Take note that an accession number is a unique identifier for a complete sequence record, while a Sequence Identifier, such as a Version, GI, or ProteinID, is an identification number assigned just to the sequence data.

 MDA Fact sheet - Numbering
Using the entry number as an accession number also causes problems, as it will lead to gaps in the accession series when loans, identifications etc. are returned.
This is the number on the transfer of title form confirming the transfer of legal title to the object to the museum.
When this happens re-numbering collections is often suggested, particularly when 'intelligent' numbering systems have been used and these have ceased to be meaningful: perhaps a classification code which is no longer in use has been included in the accession number.

Accession Number: number assigned to a body of records when it is accepted into the holdings of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission or its predecessor agencies.
Accession documents list the date, the names of the writer and the recipient, in some cases a very short synopsis of the document's content, and the "Old File Box Number" imposed by the Secretary of State's Office on certain of its archives before their transfer to the Commissioner of Agriculture, Insurance, Statistics and History.
The number consists of a date/sequence number.series number; for example, 1905/4 indicates the fourth accession received in 1905.

Sequence Identifiers: GI number and Accession.Version
Unlike the gi number system, in which sequence identification numbers were not necessarily consistent across the databases (e.g., GenBank and EMBL could each assign their own gi number to a sequence), the new system is designed to ensure consistency.
It is also designed to show a relationship between a sequence identification number and the accession number of the record in which it is found.
In contrast, GI numbers are assigned consecutively and bear no resemblance to the accession number.

 Uniform Sequence Address
The most common ways of specifying a sequence are to type the name of the file that the sequence is in, or to type 'db:entry', where 'db' is the name of a database and 'entry' is either the sequence's ID name in that database or its Accession number in the database.
Accession numbers are unique alphanumeric identifiers that are guaranteed to remain with that sequence through the rest of the life of the database.
Reading wildcarded entries requires an index of entry ID names and accession numbers to be available that can be queried to return the positions in the database of those entries whose names match the wildcarded specification.
