Astrological sign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Exaltation was considered to give the planet (or what it signified in a horary chart) dignity, with the metaphor of an honoured guest - who is the centre of attention but the extent of their ability to act is limited.
Accidental dignity describes the planet's "ability to act".
Each sign is associated with one of the classical elements (fire, earth, air, or water) and one of the three modalities (cardinal, fixed, or mutable).

 Weak Malefics
The most commonly-known essential dignity is that of sign rulership, so when Mercury is in the sign of Virgo, it is essentially dignified by sign (it is in its own sign).
The word "accidental" pertains to that which occurs by chance, so when it is applied to the planets, it indicates those conditions in place at a particular time.
A planet that is strong in essential and accidental dignities would demonstrate its signification strongly and in a positive manner.

Skyscript: Understanding Planetary Dignity and Debility - Part 1: Introducing Dignity
Mars on the midheaven, for example, is accidentally dignified due to the prominence of its position in the chart.
Accidental dignity can be conveyed by any attribute that fortifies the planet - such as being direct, swift in motion, angular, free from combustion, in a beneficial aspect to a fortunate planet or conjunct a fixed star of a fortunate nature.
Where a planet lacks essential dignity, but is brought to prominence through accidental dignity - such as angularity and an unhindered motion - the result is a powerful planet that may or may not be beneficial.

Tarot Decoded: Understanding and Using Dignities and Correspondences Review
Ms Hazel makes a very good point when she says that there are two areas that each individual reader needs to come to terms with for themselves: the choice of attribution systems (they do not "all" have to be used at the same time!), and the techniques used to apply these systems to a reading.
Dignity is defined for the purposes of this book as being the relationship between cards in a spread.
Locational Dignity - Related to the astrological concept of "accidental dignity", this occurs when a card is in a position int he spread that either enhances or undermines its strength and meaning.

Some sources also say that a planet is accidentally dignified by placement in the house numerically corresponding to a sign in which it is domiciled.
Combined with the first rule, this explains the accidental dignity and debility values assigned to each house in general.

The Essential Dignities are: (1) when a planet is in a Sign of which it is the Ruler, when it is said to be in its own Sign, or in its Domal Dignity.
Of Dignities Calvin in "Scientific Astrology" says:- "A planet in its own Sign, unless retrograde or seriously afflicted by the malefics, is as one who is master of his own house and goods.

There are also, in many urban centers, community gardening programs that help impoverished folks grow their own vegetables and fruits, which not only boost the nutrition of thier families, but they can sell their surplus in their neighborhoods and make a bit of extra cash for the family's sundries that they cannot grow themselves.

A planet is assigned Accidental Dignity or Debility according to its speed at the time a Horary or electional chart is erected.
To determine the speed, all you need to do is look in your Ephemeris for the date of the chart, then look at the planet's position on the following day and subtract the first position from the second.
In this, Lilly implies that a slow planet in a fixed sign is more likely to be inactive than a slow planet in a cardinal sign, which will attempt to propel things forward, however slowly they actually move.

A planet placed in or near the ninth or tenth houses is said to be "elevated." The nearer it is to the Midheaven, the more highly elevated it is. A planet in elevation is much more powerful, for either good or evil, than when placed at a lower altitude.
The opposite of Ascendant, the point on the western horizon where the Sun and the planets set, so called, because from thence the heavenly bodies commence their 'descent' towards the nadir of the celestial sphere.
It is explained under 'Dignity,' that when a planet is in a sign of similar nature, it is thus strengthened or dignified, but when another planet of the same nature as the ruler enters that sign it compounds its own qualities with those of the ruler and the sign, and becomes exalted or powerfully strengthened.
