A 70' oaken Viking vessel, beautifully hand carved in the stem and stern and fully laden for its last journey, was accidentally discovered by a farmer at Slagen in Vestfold County, Norway, during 1903.
The word Viking is seen on several contemporary Scandinavian runic stones, probably in the context of "one fighting at sea" or "battle at sea".
Viking and Varangian are essentially the same term, meaning ‘someone who travels or is passing through,’ a term which may be applied to anyone who passed through, whether merchant, mercenary, or marauder.

This account was included to the translation by Alfred the Great of ''the World History of Orosius''.
This was the first genuine and comprenensive account of the North, and thus it is a principle source in the exploration of the Nordic history.

When the Vikings eventually joined the Varangians (now they are Vikings, Varangians and Rus too) in their guard duties, about the time the slavs were setting up shop in the north, the Russians referred to them too as Varangians, as well as possibly others such as Angles who may have joined them.
Vikings were never referred to as Varangians on their own raids to western Europe, which is natural since they were Vikings, not Varangians.

The Viking migration to the western isles, starting in the twilight of the 8th century, was not the first time however people from Scandinavia migrated from their homelands into southern Europe.
The Viking raids were probably initially an easy way of acquiring a supplementary income, but very soon — when rumours got around — became a dominant livelihood for certain adventurous and restless individuals.

Viking Brother and sister--I believe book title was their names...blank and blank, Hager and Gerte or something?
At one point I remember an adult charachter restrains the brother from reacting to some event by saying (iambically) "The wind can't break a blade of grass, but it can fell an oak." I wish I could remember something more useful!
I remember the book had a group of fairies I think five and one wore blue, but there were othere colors like I think there was a green and a yellow one any ways they were always trying to stop Poison Ivy and her pet from taking over the world with her Ivy.
