The forerunner of the modem, the Acoustic Coupler provided a means of connecting computer equipment to the telephone company's equipment in order to send information.
Rather than connect directly to telephone lines as today's modems do, a telephone handset was actually placed into the acoustic coupler's cradle.
The acoustic coupler was in widespread use during the late 1960's, when computers were still very big and expensive, and limited to use in offices that could afford them.

 Transdata Model 305
It incorporates an accoustic modem so that it may be used directly with a telephone, or it can be connected to an external modem.
The Accoustic Modem connects the terminal to the telephone through the handset - where it is desired to use another modem, a V24 interface socket is provided.
Transdata have recognised that the Accoustic Coupler is the weakest chain in the communication link and have concentrated considerable research and development effort into improving previous shortcomings of Accoustic Couplers.

Finally, accoustic telephone converter/transmitter unit 24 acts identically to voice converter/transmitter unit 23 with the exception that a telephone answering device with an accoustic coupler is attached to a telephone 62 as will be described more fully hereinafter.
Operation is as described previously for unit 23 with the exception that processor 27, acting in accordance with factory preset instructions contained in a memory 60, monitors the status of unit 24 and controls coupler/amplifier 59 via control/data lines 61.
When a telephone 62 rings, it is "answered" by accoustic telephone coupler/amplifier 59 which amplifies the received voice signal and feeds it to speaker 58 which is positioned close enough to microphone 51 for microphone 51 to pick up the amplified voice signal.

With an accoustic modem, the call is dialed manually on the telephone, and when a connection is made to the distant computer, the handset is placed in the cups, which have a microphone next to the earpiece, and a speaker next to the mouthpiece.
While most likely technically possible at the time, using a 2600Hz tone would not only raise suspicion (if I'm not mistaken, at this time or earlier, there were a large number of busts on phreaking), and it would register as a VERY lengthy long-distance call.
I would consider this nitpick valid, due to the fact there wouldn't be a feasible alternative that would allow the use of an acoustic coupler (unless his happens to be robotic controlled now.

But for the casual traveller who doesn't need to access to those applications, perhaps the best antidote to the forces we've identified is a modest but surprisingly powerful piece of technology called the PocketMail Composer (pocketmail.com.au).
It's a blend of new and old techonologies - essentially a clam-shell pocket organiser with those old acoustic couplers of the 1970s that allow you to transmit and receive data through a handset.
You dial the service's number, position the adjustable, fold-out accoustic coupler against the handset, and with a few electronic squeaks and squawks - which generally take less than a minute - you've accomplished the job.

If you've never seen one before, these were some of the first modems made; the user would dial the number of a computer on the telephone by hand and rest the handset in the rubber cups of the coupler.
The coupler has a microphone in one side (for the earpiece) and a speaker in the other (for the mouthpiece) so binary data in audio form could be transferred to and from the local terminal.
