College Accreditation in the United States-- Pg 2
Institutional accreditation normally applies to an entire institution, indicating that each of an institution's parts is contributing to the achievement of the institution's objectives, although not necessarily all at the same level of quality.
The accredited unit may be as large as a college or school within a university or as small as a curriculum within a discipline.
For example, the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation (COPA), which was established in 1974 and existed until December 1993, served as a nongovernmental organization whose purpose was to foster and facilitate the role of accrediting agencies in promoting and ensuring the quality and diversity of American postsecondary education.

Organic certification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Individual certification bodies have their own service marks, which can act as branding to consumers—a certifier may promote the high consumer recognition value of its logo as a marketing advantage to producers, although they are certifying to the identical organic standards as their competitors.
Certification is handled by state, non-profit and private agencies that have been approved by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Formal certification is viewed by its critics as a barrier to entry for these original producers, by burdening them with increased costs, paperwork, and bureaucracy.

 IAF, INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION FORUM, INC.

Accreditation body members of IAF are admitted to the MLA only after a stringent peer evaluation of their operations to ensure that they comply fully with both the international standards and IAF requirements.

CIHE Role and Value of Accreditation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Accreditation is a status granted to an educational institution or a program that has been found to meet or exceed stated criteria of educational quality.
The criteria of an institutional accrediting body are broad, as is demanded by the attention to an entire institution and by the presence in the United States of postsecondary institutions of widely different purposes and scopes.
In such cases, the certification of the accreditation is that appropriate to either institutional or specialized accreditation, and does not imply both certifications, although a specialized body accrediting such an institution is expected to look at the whole institution, just as the institutional body is expected to consider the single educational program.

Subpart A further establishes requirements and standards for accreditation bodies to ensure that all mammography facilities under the jurisdiction of the United States are adequately and consistently evaluated for compliance with national quality standards for mammography.
However, no accreditation body shall require, either explicitly or implicitly, the use of any specific brand of imaging system or component, measuring device, software package, or other commercial product as a condition for accreditation by the body, unless FDA determines that it is in the best interest of public health to do so.
Accreditation bodies shall not count toward the random sample requirement any facilities described in paragraph (f)(1)(i)(B) of this section that were selected for a visit because of previously identified concerns.

After October 1, 1994, a certificate issued by FDA is required for lawful operation of all mammography facilities subject to the provisions of this subpart.
To obtain a certificate from FDA, facilities are required to meet the quality standards in section 900.12 and to be accredited by an approved accreditation body or other entity as designated by FDA.
Some of the downsides to dual accreditation include the increased cost and paperwork associated with dealing with two accreditation bodies and having to undergo two MQSA inspections (because each separately accredited unit would be considered a different MQSA certified facility).

With increasing frequency, we are seeing certificates that do not have any mark (logo) from a recognized accreditation body, e.g., RvA or RAB, even though the registrar may, in fact, be accredited.
When a certificate is void of an accreditation mark, the various stakeholders have no assurance that the registrar has conducted its assessments in accordance with these requirements.
We are cautioning our clients that accept certificates as proof of certification to closely examine them to verify whether or not they have an accreditation (or approval body) mark.

A Strategic Overview of Ecotourism Accreditation and Certification:
It added that “good certification programmes should meet or exceed benchmark performance criteria prior to certification and use of a logo, and be underpinned by third party auditing and verification” (Synergy).
This initial study concluded that while the use of certification mechanisms to green the tourism industry at large is valid and important, the lack of a global accreditation body has become one of the main obstacles in turning certification into an effective tool for change.
The main responsibilities of a potential accreditation body would be to establish international criteria for accreditation, monitor compliance with such criteria, promote consumer awareness, and increase credibility of certification schemes.
